The Death of Sympathy | International Perspectives | Scoop.it

We will face a new Israel after this operation ... nationalistic, religious in many ways, brainwashed, militaristic, with very little empathy for the sacrifice of the other side. Nobody in Israel cares at all."How Israel’s hawks intimidated and silenced the last remnants of the anti-war left.

Turning Point? Largest West Bank Protest in Decades Raises Spectre of a 3rd Intifada

Turning Point? Largest West Bank Protest in Decades Raises Spectre of a 3rd Intifada | International Perspectives | Scoop.it
Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip has triggered the largest West Bank protest in years, with more than 15,000 people marching Thursday from Ramallah toward Jerusalem. Two Palestinians were killed and more than 200 were wounded when Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition. We go to the West Bank to speak with journalist Amira Hass, Ha’aretz correspondent for the occupied Palestinian territories. "There were whole families, and women and men, traditional and modern, and middle-class and workers. Everybody went very determined to show that this is enough," Hass says.

The Islamic State Isn't Circumcising Women and Didn't Steal $400 Million Either

The Islamic State Isn't Circumcising Women and Didn't Steal $400 Million Either | International Perspectives | Scoop.it
Since the Islamic State captured Mosul last month, it has burned shops selling alcohol, ordered veils placed over the faces of mannequins in store windows, and implemented discriminatory policies that forced the majority of the city's Christians to flee. You'd think that was dramatic enough -- but a number of apparently false stories about the jihadist group's behavior in Iraq's second-largest city are spreading like wildfire through the Western media.
Valar Mathi's insight:

"The latest culprit appears to be U.N. official Jacqueline Badcock, who told reporters on Thursday that the Islamic State had issued a fatwa ordering women to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM). The procedure is quite rare in Iraq -- it is far more common in sub-Saharan Africa -- and is not typically something that jihadists demand."

The Loneliness of Anti-Imperialist Fighters

The Loneliness of Anti-Imperialist Fighters | International Perspectives | Scoop.it
Nights are the worst. Because that is when it all hits you and, no matter whose fault it is, you feel concerned, guilty and often extremely frustrated.
Valar Mathi's insight:

"This essay is not intended to sound like some desperate lament. But it is an honest and sad account, which is trying to demonstrate to readers, that those few of us who are still fighting and bringing to the world detailed investigative pieces that are highly critical of the Empire, are actually totally on our own and almost extinct. I met a few others, recently, and the conclusion is very straightforward: we are all walking on a tightrope, with no security and no protection. Much of our work is not remunerated, anymore. If we fall, then we fall. It is ‘our problem’. Many already have. Most of us have.

Often, the regime does not even bother to take us down. We are sitting ducks. We are exposed. We can be ‘taken care of’ at any moment.

All we get is a steady flow of supportive emails. And plenty of insults, of course…

What I am trying to say is that it is often quite scary at night."
