Growth of good jobs for Canadians the goal of the Global Skills Strategy - Canada News Centre

November 30, 2016- Mississauga, ON –Today, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Minister John McCallum and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains announced that companies will soon be able to bring in the highly-skilled experts they need to grow, flourish and provide good jobs for Canadians faster than ever before.
Julie Lessard's insight:

Finally the news is.... no news. After several months of consultations, our government agrees that we need a fast-track for high-skilled workers but still no tool to make it happen.....except further consultations with stakeholders. No definition of what is high-skill talent and a new vague concept of "job-creating" companies to be defined. I guess we can all copy and paste the comments we already made, consultation after consultation and hope for the best in 2017.

Julie Lessard's insight:

Bill Gates says Canada has "enlightened immigration policies" and suggests it is good for business
Julie Lessard's insight:

I certainly agree that we should think of immigration policies as an asset. However, where Microsoft is benefiting from a special program exempting certain workers from the burdensome LMIA process, it is not the case for many enterprises, especially start-ups craving for global talent. We need a program that benefits to all enterprises, entrepreneurs and to the society globally. The rating of our policies cannot be made based on exemptions.

City of London weighs up regional visa system to avoid post-Brexit staff gaps | International Mobility | Scoop.it
Local authority debates merits of Australian and Canadian visa system in attempt to retain and attract skilled workers
Julie Lessard's insight:

This paper refers to our system in Canada but the concept goes much further than our policies. Should we envision immigration as a more regionallly controlled process and force immigrants to buy houses in the area where they were initially admitted to work ?

I certainly agree that regions should have their say in temporary work permits as labor needs may drastically differ. For permanent residence, should we adopt more strict rules and allow more favorably permanent immigration in local areas where population declines...
