Miklos Haraszti, a Hungarian author, was the representative on freedom of the media for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe from 2004 to 2010. Charles Gati is a professorial lecturer in Russian & Eurasian studies at Johns Hopkins University’s Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

For the past quarter century, I have been writing about US international broadcasting at the macro level. The two pillars of my proposals have always been independence and consolidation. First, US international broadcasting must be under a bipartisan or nonpartisan board that shields it from direct US Government control and interference. There is no substitute for this.

UNESCO partners with Canal France International to support media’s role in democratic transition

CFI, the development arm of France’s public television broadcaster France Télévision, and UNESCO have agreed to cooperate in media development programmes in countries in transition or those affected by conflict. The agreement reflects both organizations’ commitment to freedom of expression and democracy. According to the partnership, CFI will provide 312,000 Euros to fund a wide range of projects for UNESCO to implement in cooperation with national authorities and local partners. CFI will also provide French experts to work on projects locally. The programmes’ goal is to stimulate the creation of an environment that allows for freedom of expression, by developing legislation and self-regulatory professional mechanisms for both media and social communication platforms. Projects will focus on sharing expertise with legislators, supporting media development and training for journalists, including programmes on election reporting.

Former BBC WS managing director John Tusa has declined an invitation from Lord Patten to a party on March 1 because former staff can't attend a separate party to be held at Bush on March 2. Current staff can buy tickets to the event, but no tickets are available for former WS workers.
