This is not a good sign. It is equivalent to a scenario where Voice of America went off the air. Last month, I read that Putin disbanded the Russian Academy of Sciences (which existed prior to the version in the USA by decades, maybe a century). It is sad, and worrisome.

Since March, Bush House has been emptying gradually. Region by region and floor by floor, the language services have been leaving. Now the move is almost complete, the building is silent and the lifts come unnervingly fast. The central newsroom is the last to leave, waiting until midday on Thursday 12 July, when the final five-minute bulletin will be read, and then the switch will be complete.

President Vladimir V. Putin dissolved one of Russia’s official news agencies, RIA Novosti, along with its international radio broadcaster on Monday, signaling a significant reorganization in state media at a time when Russia’s international reputation has faced criticism over political and human rights and Russian influence in neighbouring countries like Ukraine. The two agencies will be absorbed into a new state organization known as Rossiya Sevodnya, or Russia Today, to be led by a television executive and host, Dmitry K. Kiselyov, who has provoked controversy with starkly homophobic remarks and virulent commentary about foreign conspiracies against Russia.

Registrations open until Friday, September 6 2013
Subject- For each of your radio channels, you can register one or two programmes into the competition on the subject "FRONTIERS". 
- The content of these programmes will deal with this subject in a very open way: geographical frontiers, frontiers in the mind, frontiers in creation, frontiers in relationships,... Registrations- Free registrations for any private or public radiobroadcasting organism and the associations/institutions which are dedicated to broadcasting- Length of programmes: 60 minutes maximum- The programmes will be presented in their original version. A script should be provided in English or in French if the proposed version is in neither of these two languages- Rules and registration form available on http://www.urti.org/grand-prix-radio
- Programmes to be sent on CD or preferably to http://www.urti.org/grand-prix-radio-inscription
 
Awards- The final Jury will give the statute of "finalist programme" to the ten best programmes in competition- The award-winner of the Grand Prix will get a sum of 5,000 $ as well as the gold medal- Three other rewards will be given among the nine other finalist programmes: silver medal, bronze medal and Jacques Matthey-Doret award for discovery For further information: prixradio@urti.org
