New unskippable copyright warnings coming to Blu-ray discs. Fans of being treated like copyright violators will enjoy new measures being taken to protect movies from piracy.
The pirates will always be able to break the existing systems. The only thing a new control system does is delay the enjoyment of the media by the honest user andthrows down the proverbial gauntlet in front of an army of hackers.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit brought life back to Rosetta Stone’s trademark infringement case against Google.
Portfolio.com (blog)Are Intellectual Property and National Security Really Linked?
A scary thought.
1) For example, let's say a designer creates a brochure for you using a stock image. Your designer has to purchase specific rights to use that image in your brochure. The price of the stock imagery is based upon the type of ...

Earlier this week I participated in the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology Symposium on Orphan Works and Mass Digitization. I was part of a panel devoted to various solutions to the problem. Here is my presentation.
See the scoop on the Patent Wars article for my take on this insanity.
PUBLISHING obscure academic journals is that rare thing in the media industry: a licence to print money.
Interesting take on freedom of knowledge. I know that people should be paid for their efforts, but then they should also pay for the efforts of others. It's one thing if I write a paper for a journal for the enrichment of all, but there should always be a downward-paying scheme to reimburse us (the academics) for writing the articles.
I think my greatest concern is not that the journals cost money, but that the academics writing the articles don't get compensated. Goes right along the same logic of patents and copyrights: if I create something but I don't ever get compensation for it, then eventually, I won't have the desire to create anymore. This leads to stagnation of society.
We don't want society to stagnate now, do we?

Steht die Abschaffung des Urheberrechts unmittelbar bevor? Müssen Künstler des Internets wegen bald von Almosen leben?
Makes no sense why the Pirate-party wants to abolish copyright entirely... do they think that art grows on trees and you can jsut take everything? If they get their way, then NO ONE will make anything for them to steal anymore, because then no one can make money doing it.

The thing about the end of Agency is that it's not over. That is to say that the rearguard action by the legacy publishing establishment isn't finished.

The story behind the making of Mary Poppins is to be told in a Hollywood film with Emma Thompson earmarked as Pamela Travers, the author who signed away the rights to Walt Disney only to regret it.
This is what happens when you sign away your rights, but keep your royalties... you lose the right to complain if they change it, but you become a bazillionaire.
Where's the problem?

Evidence that Afghanistan is rebuilding.
The Internet Age is becoming as known for patent litigation as it is for online innovation.
Holy moley. All those geeky kids on the playground in grade school may have aged, but they sure as heck haven't grown up. This is greed at its finest - and I thought hedge funds were bad.
In a nutshell, it used to be if your company is failing, you find out why, stop doing that, and go out and innovate to create new business. Now, if your company is failing, your playground logic kicks in, saying "Poor me, I have a stupid toy and no friends to play with. Look, that kid over there has a cool-looking toy and he's got lots of friends (and money). I think I'll go steal his toy so I'll have it and all his friends."
So, this is now the new "get-rich-quick" scheme for the big corporates. Sue everyone for their toys.
