Na de millenniumdoelstellingen: het post-2015 tijdperk | BTC blog van Sven Huyssen | International aid trends from a Belgian perspective | Scoop.it

'We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty [...]. We resolve further to halve, by the year 2015, the proportion of the world's people whose income is less than one dollar a day.' — United Nations Millennium Declaration (2000).

Bij het schrijven van deze blog is het nog welgeteld 475 dagen (of één jaar, drie maanden en negentien dagen) tot de deadline van de millenniumontwikkelingsdoelen (MOD). Waar staan we vandaag? Wat staat er ons te wachten in het post-2015 tijdperk?

" Post-2015: Zero is the Comely-est Number »

" Post-2015: Zero is the Comely-est Number » | International aid trends from a Belgian perspective | Scoop.it

One thing we emphasized in the Karver/Kenny/Sumner paper on MDGs 2.0 was that the MDGs are far better remembered, and have been far more influential, than the rest of the Millennium Declaration from which they were drawn.  We suggested that was because the MDGs were easy to understand, self-evidently important, numerical and time bound, and we called for any follow up goals to keep those vital features. That point seems to be widely agreed, and discussion over numbers in the post-2015 period is getting more specific.

Schooling Is Not Education! Using Assessment to Change the Politics of Non-Learning

Schooling Is Not Education! Using Assessment to Change the Politics of Non-Learning | International aid trends from a Belgian perspective | Scoop.it

Most  of the world’s children now live in countries on track to meet the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary completion by 2015. Countries have indeed made great progress getting kids in school, but behind that progress is a problem: many children are hardly learning anything in school. Some measures of learning are just dismal. In India, for example, only about one-third of children in grade 5 can perform long division. Nearly one-half  cannot read a grade 2 text, and one in five cannot follow a grade 1 text.

MDG on education set to be missed amid fears that aid is drying up | International aid trends from a Belgian perspective | Scoop.it
A fifth of young people in developing countries fail to complete basic primary education, and progress has stalled since 2010.

A drive to get more children into school in the developing world is grinding to a halt as aid for education stagnates, amid fears that this will fall faster than overall aid levels. The education for all (EFA) global monitoring report, Putting education to work, said that on current trends, the millennium development goal (MDG) of universal primary education by 2015 will be missed by a large margin.

Keep new development goals simple

Keep new development goals simple | International aid trends from a Belgian perspective | Scoop.it

The Millennium Development Goals may not be perfect but they are simple and straightforward - qualities diplomats and others fear could be lost in the process of crafting new targets to replace the MDGs, which expire in 2015.U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon underscored this on Tuesday in remarks to members of a high-level panel charged with working out what comes next.

“We need a clear post-2015 development agenda - an agenda with shared responsibilities for all countries, with the fight against poverty at the fore and sustainable development at the core,” he said.
