The beauty of practicing ancient martial arts, such as tai chi and qigong, is that you can cultivate stillness without standing still. Tai chi and qigong clear those blockages and restore the body's natural energy back to balance....
According to the CDC, falls are the number one reason for death and injury among people age 65 and older. More than two million older people went to an emergency room in 2010 because of a fall.
Another reason Tai Chi might save your life one day!
“ They recorded 227 falls from 130 individuals over about three years.
Tripping caused just 1 out of 5 of the incidents. The biggest reason for falling—accounting for 41% of the total—was due to incorrect weight shifting, like leaning over too far, says Stephen Robinovitch, a professor in the biomedical physiology and kinesiology and engineering science departments."

We examined 40 patients aroused from prolonged coma after a severe TBI, undergoing long-term rehabilitation according to a standard phased rehabilitation program. These patients were divided into two numerically even groups: a control group treated according to the standard program, and an experimental group, who received an additional goal oriented program enhanced with selected Tai-Chi exercises. The research methods included analysis of documentation (MRI, CT), a structured clinical interview, and the Standard Self-Care Scale. Results The experimental group achieved significant improvement of self-care skills, whereas in the control group the improvement was slight and not statistically significant. The value of co-efficient j (0.64) indicates a very strong association between the rehabilitation procedure and improved self-care in the experimental group, but not in the control group. Conclusions Our results confirmed that a goal-oriented rehabilitation program enhanced with elements of Tai-Chi was more effective than the standard program in improving the performance of activities of daily living.
A story is told about Albert Einstein. He had just given a test to a class of seniors, and he was walking across campus, followed closely by an assistant. "Dr. Einstein," the assistant said, "you just gave the same test...
Does thinking too specifically about a bet make you more likely to lose?
I'm going to keep adding mind/brain/consciousness stuff here for the time being as I think a great deal of internal martial arts practice is about strengthening/expanding/exploring/focusing the mind. If it doesn't I might start another feed more focused on this kind of thing in particular.
"The difficulty is that we are so programmed to believe that we have no other senses that we resist even the idea that we do. Yet we learn from practicing Tai-chi that we have a proprioceptive sense – the sense of momentum flowing through our bodies and how the parts of our body line up with each other. As we practice the push hands exercise (a two person interaction), we learn that we can sense the state of balance within our partner and even how his body prepares to carry out an intention to push even though our eyes are closed."
The study conducted by Dr. Michael R. Irwin focuses on the Herpes Zoster, a virus which commonly afflicts older adults, and how a mind-body approach can complement vaccine usage by augmenting immune responses in these individuals.
