Pain makes people more charitable

Pain makes people more charitable | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it

(Phys.org) —A study involving Victoria University researchers supports the longstanding theory that taking part in extreme, painful rituals increases prosocial behaviours and attitudes including making people more charitable.

Religion expert Dr Joseph Bulbulia, Associate Professor in Psychology Dr Ron Fischer and Dr Paul Reddish are contributing to international research which seeks to understand why extreme religious rituals have persisted throughout human history and into modern times.

The trio visited the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius last year to observe two rituals that occur during the annual Hindu festival, Thaipusam. "We're interested in understanding why so many religious rituals contain an element of suffering, and why extreme rituals, such as those in Thaipusam, persist for centuries," says Dr Bulbulia.

Online Psychotherapy as Good as In-Person Treatment, Study Says

Online Psychotherapy as Good as In-Person Treatment, Study Says | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it
In a study with actual patients, University of Zurich researchers found that online psychotherapy is "just as efficient" as traditional, in-person therapy.

The university said the patients were divided in two equal groups: one that received traditional cognitive behavior therapy both orally and in writing; and another who got online therapy and had to "perform one predetermined written task per therapy unit."

Following the therapy treatments, researchers say both groups reported lower levels of depression. The specific results were similar: 53% of patients in the online therapy group were no longer diagnosed as depressed, compared to 50% in the face-to-face group. The effectiveness of online therapy even continued three months after treatment. The university said after three months, depression couldn't be detected in 57% of the online group versus 42% of the traditional therapy group.

The Truth about Recovery - What's it all About? | Sober Nation

The Truth about Recovery - What's it all About? | Sober Nation | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it

For those who haven’t experienced the visceral nature of the pain addiction brings to one’s life or haven’t waded through the wreckage of a life devastated by living a lie, the concept of recovery is a language not easily comprehended and has little antecedent in their own experiences.  This is something that I have thought about….

“What is recovery like?”

I think about it for a while….and I think….and then I come up with my answer.  Nothing really is different.
