How Iceland Got Teens to Say No to Drugs

How Iceland Got Teens to Say No to Drugs | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it
Curfews, sports, and understanding kids’ brain chemistry have all helped dramatically curb substance abuse in the country.

Lon Woodbury's insight:

This sounds partially along the lines of "midnight basketball" that was pursued a number of years ago in the US.  The Iceland experience suggests that the US pursuit was along the right lines, but it seems to have disappeared so what happened?  -Lon

Sonja Lam's comment, Today, 12:12 AM
I see the issue of youths taking drugs as a way for them to cope with their stress and troubles faced in daily life. I believe the reason for them resorting to drugs to solve their problems is because these youths do not have a hobby, interest or outlet for them to vent frustration and anger. Taking drugs stimulates certain emotions in these youths that make them feel happier or relaxed, as does doing something enjoyable and interesting like sports, art or dancing. Both activities can help youths cope with unhappiness, however taking drugs would cause a more detrimental effect on these people should they use it as a constant default method of dealing with stress.

As the article mentions, the nationwide effort of helping youths and young adults find an interest is one of their priorities to help them solve the problem of increasing cases of drug abuse. However, enrolling students and youths in school programmes to develop their interests is just not enough. Along with helping themselves, support and encouragement has to be seen from their teachers and especially their parents. What I highly support in the article was the abolishment of typical parenting tactics such as forcing their child to periodically stay home at certain periods of time to talk about their life or share personal life with their family. Instead, parents were encouraged to spend quantity time with their child to actually interact and bond with their child beyond a superficial level and strengthen the relationship between them. For a child to know and recognise that they have a talent/interest that they take pride in, as well a loving family who cares about them, I believe that they would trust that there will be someone who they can fall back on whenever they are down. In addition parents can keep an extra eye out on their child given their close relationship and the extracurricular activities would be able to keep the children busy and keep their minds off taking drugs. With a better sense of self-pride and relationship with family and friends in their school/external programmes, I think that youths would be less likely to take drugs.

Teenagers, Alcohol and Brain Damage

Teenagers, Alcohol and Brain Damage | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it

Adolescence is a perilous time. This is the period from about age 10 until the early 20s when the prefrontal cortex is going through the critical “use it or lose it” blossoming and pruning process on the way to establishing an individual’s foundation for critical thinking. To ingrain critical thinking skills, young people have to exercise a lot  of critical thinking, which teens find it hard to do because that part of the brain is “under construction.

31 Things Your Kids Should Be Doing Instead of Homework

31 Things Your Kids Should Be Doing Instead of Homework | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it
It’s not just that homework itself has no academic benefits for little kids, and may even be harmful, it’s also that homework is replacing other fun, developmentally appropriate, and valuable activities – activities that help them grow into healthy, happy adults.

So, what are some of the things kids could be doing in those hours between the end of the school day and bed time?

Via John Evans, Dennis Swender

Homework for teens is also problematical and all too often is overdone.  Free time, or play time, or just hanging out is very important for children to grow up properly. -Lon
