There Is No Silver Bullet For Education Reform

The "silver bullet" belief assumes that all schools face the same challenges.

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, July 26, 2:59 PM
There is not. What we need are teachers, students, administrators, politicians, and community members sharing their experiences. Those closest to the classroom have to given a space for their voices to be heard. This means teachers and students have to be genuinely listened to.

PS it is not education reform we are looking for. It is school reform and transforming our schools. Education is a 24/7 phenomenon.

New Zealand government plans army bootcamps for worst young offenders

New Zealand government plans army bootcamps for worst young offenders | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it
With six weeks to go before the general election, the ruling National party floats idea for year-long military training
Lon Woodbury's insight:

Boot camps were tried in the US and not only were they ineffective, but sometimes dangerous.  The private sector got rid of them after several preventable deaths.  Now, virtually all of those remaining are government programs with evidence showing they don't work.  It seems the basic principle is that punishment all too often backfires.  It sounds like New Zealand is looking at going through the same experience. -Lon

Infidelity to Truth: Education Malpractices in American Public Education: Chapter Four

Infidelity to Truth: Education Malpractices in American Public Education: Chapter Four | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it
By Duane Swacker About Duane Chapter 4 Aesthetics and the Nature of Assessment There are no facts, only interpretations. Friedrich Nietzsche Nietzsche couldn't have known just how true his aphorism would eventually be in relation to assessing the teaching and learning process as many children at the end of the 19th century didn't complete much…

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, July 28, 1:45 PM
The chapter's title, Aesthetics and the Nature of Assessment along with the opening quote by Nietzsche suggests assessment is a hermeneutic task. Teachers are like artists who are always intepreting their own work as it emerges. Hans-George Gadamer, Paul Ricouer, and John Caputo wrote extensively about the hermeneutic task.
