Therapists Reveal What Therapy Can Do For You

Therapists Reveal What Therapy Can Do For You | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it
Therapy isn’t only for people with a diagnosis — or in crisis. Therapy is a great way to enhance your happiness (or what psychologists call “well-being”).

As Alison Thayer, LCPC, CEAP, a psychotherapist at Urban Balance, said, “We focus on eating healthy and exercising to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but we often do not apply the same principles to our mind and mental health. Consider therapy sessions to be the equivalent of providing our bodies with a nutritious meal.”

In fact, therapy is nourishing in many different ways...

This sounds very similar to the late 19th century when creative solutions to education were happening everywhere including one I read about at virtually no cost with street newspaper boys that used a lot of peer educating, and free reusable resources, along with many one room schoolhouses that often were private.  Most were swamped by the offer of free public education and mandatory attendance laws starting at the turn of the century. -Lon

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic | Woodbury Reports Review of News and Opinion Relating To Struggling Teens | Scoop.it

For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of  bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.

.

We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.

.

Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

.

Via Gust MEES, Dean J. Fusto
Lon Woodbury's insight:

Many of the forerunners of Therapeutic Boarding Schools (called Emotional Growth Schools then) used this concept - called Theme teaching then.  It does seem to break down the artificial boundaries between narrow subjects to give a wider perspective.  I presume like anything else, it can be abused or misapplied. -Lon

Federal Court Rules That Exclusion of Residential Treatment May Violate Federal Parity Act

In the fall of 2014, the law firms of Barnhill & Galand P.C., Zuckerman Spaeder LLP, and Psych-Appeal, Inc. filed a class action suit, Craft et al. v. Health Care Service Corporation, on behalf of an adolescent struggling with anorexia, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder whose claims for residential treatment were categorically denied following nine psychiatric hospitalizations. Residential treatment is often the most appropriate, if not the only suitable level of care for individuals with chronic mental health or substance use disorders, which are frequently under-diagnosed and under-treated.
Lon Woodbury's insight:

This might eventually mean two things.  1. Easier to get insurance payment for Residential Treatment. 2. Insurance premiums will go up because of an increase in claims.  -Lon

Lawrence School: Re-Imagining School - YouTube

Students learn best when their differences are understood and accepted, when appropriate accommodations are made available and, most importantly, when their strengths as learners are defined, affirmed, and cultivated. Our approach – respecting differences and building on strengths – is vital for students who learn differently and may well serve as a successful model for educating all students, in all schools.
