The most detailed 3D world model | facebook fan pages, fan page strategy, fan page ideas, best facebook fan page | Scoop.it

"How to create a detailed 3D topographic model of the entire Earth? As you could suspect the only feasible way to do it is using satellites. But a regular satellite scan will not be detailed enough to give you a meter-level accuracy. Instead of using a single satellite they’ve launched to an orbit two satellites orbiting next to each other capturing stereoscopic scans of the surface of the Earth (that scan the same areas from slightly different angles). Now this data has been processed into a seamless 3-dimensional world map of unprecedented accuracy of 1 meter. The data and the press release are publicly available."

So, why just use technology, when you can build it, right? But first—students need the programming know-how in order to do so… And that begins with you!

Whether you choose to embrace the concept or not, it’s becoming more and more important to equip students with coding skills. It’s the new literacy for a generation of students growing up in a digitally-connected world. Having this knowledge not only strengthens general skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, but it will become invaluable in their future as a wide range of industries are eager to hire individuals with programming abilities.

50 Apps That Represent 50 New Ways To Learn | facebook fan pages, fan page strategy, fan page ideas, best facebook fan page | Scoop.it
Modern learning is in a state of flux as it struggles to find out what it wants to become.

Schools continue to merely “add on” learning, while technology strongly suggests new possibilities for inside and beyond the classroom. From learning simulations and mobile learning, to adaptive apps, flipped classrooms, and self-directed learning through amazing digital channels, the possibilities for learning are almost overwhelming.

Below we’ve gathered a diverse list of learning apps across iOS and Android from giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, as well as upstarts like Brainfeed, The Sandbox, and Knowji. None of the apps are perfect, but each app does something special, and in that talent represents what’s possible as we careen towards 2020 and beyond.

The gap between the skills people learn and the skills people need is becoming more obvious, as traditional learning falls short of equipping students with the knowledge they need to thrive, according to the World Economic Forum report New Vision for Education: Fostering Social and Emotional Learning Through Technology.

Today's job candidates must be able to collaborate, communicate and solve problems – skills developed mainly through social and emotional learning (SEL). Combined with traditional skills, this social and emotional proficiency will equip students to succeed in the evolving digital economy.

In Language Classrooms, Students Should Be Talking

In Language Classrooms, Students Should Be Talking | facebook fan pages, fan page strategy, fan page ideas, best facebook fan page | Scoop.it
We have gotten it wrong, really wrong, in the language classroom. Historically, the teacher stood at the front of the classroom spouting details of grammar. Students sat at desks placed in straight rows directed toward the teacher and madly took notes. They later filled out worksheets and tried to memorize the content presented by the all-knowing educator. And this is still often the scenario today.

I feel like this is a bit of a "Der!" moment. But does this really still happen in the language classroom?

Dennis Swender's curator insight, October 14, 12:39 PM
Student talk:  the most underused and understood literacy skill that provides one of the quickest and most salient language acquisition methods.  Earlier research conducted by the Juniper Gardens Children's Project in conjunction with the KU Scheifelbusch Institute of Life Span Studies and the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools revealed that oral language responding during a typical classroom day totaled only 7%. The students were engaged in Academic Talk only 5% of the day and 2% of the time in Social Talk.

“The students spent 76% of the day neither initiating nor responding to language (verbal or written), 21% responding to language initiated by the teacher or the material, and only 45% initiating any verbal or written language. The highest coded student activity was passive attention (i.e., Attending: looking at the teacher or material) at 38% and the most used language for instruction was English at 58%. Although students spent the highest percentage of the day in academic activities (i.e., Math 20%, Reading 18%, and Language 16%), their academic engagement time totaled only 44%.”
