If you want to follow your dreams, you have to say no to all the alternatives

If you want to follow your dreams, you have to say no to all the alternatives | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it
Our brains behave like a beachball filled with bees. Hundreds of conflicting impulses, pushing us in different directions.

People never want to do one thing. We want to do all the things. We simultaneously want to exercise and to learn Spanish andto go out for pizza. Our desires are countless, independent agents, working to nudge our beachball in their own selfish direction.

And so usually, that ball is going nowhere. It’s controlled more by the terrain than by the will of what’s inside it.

Ivo Nový's insight:

This is how most people live their lives. We feel endlessly conflicted. We never have enough time. And what happens to us is stronger than our ability to combat it. Let’s fix it.

The Key To Long-Term Success: Explore Explanations Without Creating Excuses

The Key To Long-Term Success: Explore Explanations Without Creating Excuses | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it
Understanding the critical difference between explanations and excuses can help you become successful.

You aren’t likely to hear a truly successful person say, “Sorry to keep you waiting but traffic was terrible,” or “I would have been on time, but the kids were so slow getting ready this morning.” Instead, they’re more likely to say, “Sorry I’m late. I should have left my house sooner.”

That’s because successful people recognize the critical difference between an explanation and an excuse.

Ivo Nový's insight:

An explanation accepts full responsibility and an excuse places blame, minimizes liability, and tries to avoid consequences.

How to plan a round-the-world trip - Lonely Planet

How to plan a round-the-world trip - Lonely Planet | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it

Round-the-world trip is the ultimate trip: circumnavigating the planet, and stopping off wherever takes your fancy. Great for travellers who want to see it all, or who are just plain indecisive. But booking a round-the-world (RTW) trip can be a complex business. Hereʼs the guide to getting started.

Ivo Nový's insight:

The weather will never be ideal in all your stops. So, focus on what you want to do most and research conditions there: if a Himalaya trek is your highlight, donʼt land in Nepal mid-monsoon; if you want to swim with whale sharks off Western Australia, be there April-July.

5 Habits Of People Who Always Get What They Want

5 Habits Of People Who Always Get What They Want | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it

You’ve been offered a job but the salary wasn’t the number you were hoping to hear. Or you’ve received a bid on a project and it’s under what you think it’s worth. Instead of accepting the deal in disappointment or firing back with another amount, sports agent Molly Fletcher says it’s time to start a conversation.

Unfortunately, most of the world doesn’t ask for what it wants. A recent survey by Salary.com found that just 44% of people negotiate for a better salary.

And companies are happy when you don’t negotiate, says Fletcher: “Few offer their best price out of the gate,” she says.

5 examples of how the languages we speak can affect the way we think

5 examples of how the languages we speak can affect the way we think | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it

Economist Keith Chen starts today’s talk with an observation: to say, “This is my uncle,” in Chinese, you have no choice but to encode more information about said uncle.

The language requires that you denote the side the uncle is on, whether he’s related by marriage or birth and, if it’s your father’s brother, whether he’s older or younger.

“All of this information is obligatory. Chinese doesn’t let me ignore it,” says Chen. “In fact, if I want to speak correctly, Chinese forces me to constantly think about it.”

This got Chen wondering: Is there a connection between language and how we think and behave? In particular, Chen wanted to know: does our language affect our economic decisions?

9 Essential Habits of Remarkably Effective People

9 Essential Habits of Remarkably Effective People | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it
You don't have to be born able to execute at a high level. Here's how you can develop that vital skill.

There's a huge biggest difference between being efficient and being effective.

Efficient people are well organized and competent. They check things off their to-do list. They complete projects. They get stuff done.

Effective people do all that ... but they check the right things off their to-do list. They complete the right projects. They get the right stuff done.

Ivo Nový's insight:

And everything starts with goals. Effort without a genuine purpose is just effort. Effective people don't just know what to do--they know why. They have a long-term goal. They have short-term goals that support their long-term goals.

Why You Need To Feed Your Brain Different Experiences

Why You Need To Feed Your Brain Different Experiences | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it
You wouldn't eat one food all the time, so why do you spend all of your workday in front of a screen?

As Clive Thompson, the author of Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better, would argue, working in analog or mediated ways changes how our brains and thoughts behave:

anyone who's ever received a serendipitous answer from someone on Twitter has experienced how technology can amplify our social thinking, while at the same time if you've put off your projects because you're fiddling on Facebook, you know much tech can distract us--to the point of changing the structure of our brains.

15 People Who Are Living The Dream

15 People Who Are Living The Dream | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it

"Living the dream" can mean a lot of different things. To some, it's a life spent kicking back on a beach with an endless supply of Mai Tais.
