How and why do we pick our friends?

How and why do we pick our friends? | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it
Studies of dolphins, primates and humans show the reason we choose the companions we do is more complex, and perhaps less honorable, than we might think.

“Friendship," wrote CS Lewis, “is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You, too? Thought I was the only one.’” He wasn't the only one. Plato wrote "similarity begets friendship." in his 360 BCE play Phaedrus. And Aristotle had the same idea when he wrote, "some define it as a matter of similarity; they say that we love those who are like ourselves."

Magnetically Levitating Elevators Could Reshape Skylines

Magnetically Levitating Elevators Could Reshape Skylines | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it
With the debut of passenger elevators some 150 years ago, cities were forever changed. Freed from the tyranny of stairwells, architects built as high as they liked. That is, until they ran into another barrier: the weight of steel cables.

A new elevator design from German company ThyssenKrupp may solve that problem by trading cables for tracks that employ magnetic levitation, or maglev.

Stop consuming, start acting

Stop consuming, start acting | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it

We live in a world of tips and tricks, listicles and deep thoughts (in 140 characters or less). This is a world we actively perpetuate by continually showing how eager we all are to consume this type of information. It lures us in with promises of saving time, building better habits, retiring early by working less, etc…

Like ravenous dogs, we refresh our feeds – even though we just spent the last 20 minutes reading some life-hacking article. Maybe a new one will appear with even more hacks! We salivate for more, unsatiated by the last.

KukuKube is addicting.

The online quiz tests your ability to differentiate shades of color. It starts out simple enough with four big squares and one shaded an obviously different hue.

The key is to be quick, because if you wait too long, the game will end after 60 seconds and score you lower.

Happiness is strongly associated with others. No matter how hard we try to find happiness in simple things and also help happiness emerge from within ourselves, happiness will never be that strong if it is not associated with the presence of others.

Your relationship with other people and the level of interaction you have with them is what dictates to a huge degree how happy you will feel in your everyday endeavors. Your family, your friends, your girlfriend, your spouse, your colleagues and even strangers are shaping on a daily basis the design of your happiness.

The 3 Things That Stop Most People From Achieving Their Goals

The 3 Things That Stop Most People From Achieving Their Goals | Interesting Reading | Scoop.it

How many goals have you set in your life? A hundred? Ten thousand? Even more?

How many of these goals have you actually achieved?

If you're like most people, this second number is going to be a fraction of the first. A big reason is that as soon as you set a goal, three things emerge to stop you.

But most of us don't even realize what they are, and as a result, we are just left with our unaccomplished goal and an unshakable feeling of failure.

What if you could not only identify these obstacles but also learn to welcome them? Well, the good news is that you can....

Graeme Reid's curator insight, April 20, 8:54 PM

If you can look for the considerations, fears, and roadblocks and know that they are simply a part of the process, then you can welcome them, face them, process them, and ultimately overcome them.

Jessica Urquhart's curator insight, April 21, 11:15 PM

I have learnt that when dealing with human beings, nothing is set in stone. I like that the writer has taken his own experiences and believes that most people have the same values and beliefs. I feel that there are many factors that get in the way of achieving goals and this is no different to safety culture. In the future I'd like to see businesses understand all the varied types of people that their management systems must adapt to. In history there seems to be only one type of management system and is widely misunderstood by the majority of people within the organisation. Understanding personal values, goals and behaviours should be the foundation of any management system.

Tom Bundick, Ph.D.'s curator insight, May 3, 10:48 AM

Neither autism nor neuro, specifically speaking. Great conceptualization of what gets in our way, though.
