Developing multiliteracies in ELT through telecollaboration [Guth & Helm, 2012]

Developing multiliteracies in ELT through telecollaboration [Guth & Helm, 2012] | intercultural exchanges + telecollaboration | Scoop.it

"Communicating and collaborating in online contexts can be quite different from face-to-face situations and requires students to acquire multiple literacies in addition to foreign language skills and intercultural communicative competence. This paper looks at how the development of multiliteracies can be included in the EFL classroom through the practice of telecollaboration, that is internet-mediated intercultural exchange. The integration of multiliteracies in the task design of the three stages of a telecollaboration project is illustrated through practical examples from an exchange which used English as a lingua franca." UNI-Collaboration | Online Intercultural Exchange

UNI-Collaboration | Online Intercultural Exchange | intercultural exchanges + telecollaboration | Scoop.it

Supporting virtual intercultural exchange between university classrooms across Europe and beyond.

[Excerpt]: "This platform is aimed at supporting university educators and mobility coordinators to organise and run online intercultural exchanges for their students. In these exchanges, students from universities in different countries collaborate together using online communication tools to carry out collaborative projects and to learn about each other's language and culture. By taking part in such projects, students can develop foreign language skills, intercultural awareness, electronic literacies as well as learning more about their particular subject area.

If you are a teacher working at a university in Europe or elsewhere, this platform will help you to find partner teachers and classes in other countries, to read about tasks, successful projects and evaluation tools and to exchange questions and experiences with an experienced community of practitioners."

Classroom Interactions as Cross-Cultural Encounters: Native Speakers in EFL Lessons : Asian EFL Journal

Classroom Interactions as Cross-Cultural Encounters: Native Speakers in EFL Lessons : Asian EFL Journal | intercultural exchanges + telecollaboration | Scoop.it

book review [excerpt]: "Current ESL/EFL pedagogy is aimed at providing English learners with both linguistic and sociocultural competencies (Savignon & Sysoyev, 2002). Luk and Lin s Classroom interactions as cross-cultural encounters meets this expectation. As part of the EST & Applied Linguistics Professional Series aimed at to helping TESOL professionals and policy makers better understand dialogic intercultural communication theoretically and empirically, this 10 chapter volume addresses a range of issues.

Chapter 1 presents the authors socio-cultural and English learning backgrounds. Through personal anecdotes, the authors depict how cross-cultural encounters with English users from different socio-cultural backgrounds have shaped the authors perceptions and attitudes toward English learning and teaching. In addition, the authors inform readers that the empirical data that the book is based on are primarily from ethnographic approaches and case studies."

"The INTENT team will be offering several training workshops on telecollaboration in 2013. Registration is free but participants are expected to cover all their own travel and maintenance costs.

Getting Universities ready for Telecollaboration

Telecollaboration is online intercultural exchange between classes of foreign language students in geographically distant locations. The Erasmus Multilateral Project INTENT (Integrating Telecollaborative Networks into Foreign Language Higher Education) aims to raise greater awareness among students, educators and decision makers of telecollaboration as a tool for virtual mobility in FL education at university level and also to achieve more effective integration of telecollaboration in Higher Education Institutions."

Harry Potter Book Project in Edmodo: A Collaborative Initiative Between Students from Egypt and Canada by Ayat Tawel

Harry Potter Book Project in Edmodo: A Collaborative Initiative Between Students from Egypt and Canada by Ayat Tawel | intercultural exchanges + telecollaboration | Scoop.it

[excerpt]: "With an increasing acceptance of children using internet for academic purposes, comes apprehension pertaining to their safety and well-being when online. While as educators we want children to become more « net savvy », we need to temper this with precautions to keep them safe on the web.

This session will demonstrate how educators Ayat Tawel and Bernadette Rego successfully established using Edmodo, a free Learning management system, as a place for students from Canada and Egypt to meet and discuss questions enhancing their reading skills using the popular book « Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone ». We will demonstrate how Edmodo and other web 2.0 tools can be used to protect the students' online identity and communication while creating an enriching learning atmosphere."

Evaluating the outcomes of online intercultural exchange [O'Dowd, 2007]

Evaluating the outcomes of online intercultural exchange [O'Dowd, 2007] | intercultural exchanges + telecollaboration | Scoop.it

"Reports the findings of three qualitative studies which were carried out in university level EFL classes in Germany. The three groups used various combinations of communication technologies such as email, web-based message boards, and video conferencing in order to engage in online exchanges with different partner classes in Ireland and the USA. The research was aimed at establishing, firstly, how such virtual intercultural contact can contribute to the development of intercultural communicative competence, and secondly, what skills and knowledge both students and teachers need in order to engage successfully in this complex online learning activity. The research revealed that the success of such exchanges often depends on their appropriate integration into the language classroom and that it is necessary to reassess the role of the teacher in telecollaborative exchanges."  [Abstract]

For Grand Forks 5th graders, the 21st century version of ‘pen pals’

For Grand Forks 5th graders, the 21st century version of ‘pen pals’ | intercultural exchanges + telecollaboration | Scoop.it

[Excerpt]: "Standing in front of a computer screen, fifth-grader Hannah SnoBeck of Ben Franklin Elementary in Grand Forks held up a page of her homework. Above her, the blurred image of students in Kongsvinger, Norway, filled a projection screen.  “This is what our math work looks like,” she told them. “We’re working on circle graphs in math. On the back, we have long division problems for practice.”

Using video conferencing software Skype, the two fifth-grade classrooms bridged thousands of miles between them Tuesday as they displayed their notebooks, textbooks and other bits of their daily life to each other in a more modern version of a pen pal arrangement.  Ben Franklin is the only school in the district that currently uses Skype for international discussion and the results have been positive."

Five Competencies for Culturally Competent Teaching and Learning | Faculty Focus | intercultural exchanges + telecollaboration | Scoop.it

Today’s classrooms require that instructors possess competencies for teaching all students... an instructor who is sensitive and responsive to the unique differences of each student. Recognizing the need to strengthen specific competencies to reach and teach all students requires an understanding of new ideas and a willingness to view instruction through varied cultural lenses.
