Developmental Intercultural Competence

Developmental Intercultural Competence | Intercultural Competence | Scoop.it
Intercultural competence is more important than ever, wherever in the world we live and work. But what do we really know about how to develop such competence? What do theory and practice tell us about how to gain maximum development quickly?

One exceptionally rapid, proven way to successfully improve cross-cultural competence is to use the MashUp: a natural and powerful combination of two leading intercultural competence development processes: Cultural Detective (CD) and Personal Leadership (PL).

This fourth-month course will transform your professional practice. It will enable you to use the MashUp in a developmentally appropriate manner to support and stretch learners at all stages of intercultural development. All work will be conducted virtually, allowing you to complete the coursework from your office, home, or during travels. You will need online access and a headset.

The course is facilitated by Dianne Hofner Saphiere, Heather Robinson, and Barbara F. Schaetti. Milton Bennett, creator of the DMIS (Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity), normally joins us for part of the course.

Click here for information on the previous course; updated 2012 design and details will be posted soon. Click here to read a brief article about the combination of these three methods.

10 Ways White Liberals Perpetuate Racism

10 Ways White Liberals Perpetuate Racism | Intercultural Competence | Scoop.it
Somewhere down where we don't like to go, is a place where racism lives. It's automatic and hidden. Binding and resistant to change. No matter how well-meaning we are, no matter how open-minded. Like the "root kit" on a computer, racism is hidden and operating without our knowledge.

Boston Kimono Alarms Culture Crusaders

Boston Kimono Alarms Culture Crusaders | Intercultural Competence | Scoop.it
Worrying that someone might touch a robe is tinfoil-hat territory. But Boston protesters are still decrying an exhibit featuring a dress-up kimono.
Dianne Hofner Saphiere's insight:

OMG, IMHO this takes political correctness to insanely new levels. How silly and stupid. Yet, the ruckus raises awareness of imperialist history and attitudes. And, we most definitely need dialogue/definition around what comprises cultural appropriation and what doesn't. And then there's this whole new trend of people other than members of the represented culture speaking up for the represented culture....

More Cultural Appropriation: The Swastika | Intercultural Competence | Scoop.it

The swastika is sadly a symbol of genocide and the Holocaust for many; something to be reviled. There was an unsuccessful effort to ban the use of the swastika in the European Union. Seeing this symbol brings forth pain and outrage for many people.

Swastika is a Sanskrit word, a religious symbol of good fortune used by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and others worldwide. It can be seen in the art of the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Celts, Native Americans, and Persians as well.
