Here's a lengthy, although compelling, article about developing your empathy. Whislt it has an educational slant, it is about a subject that crosses over into many, if not all, disciplines.

The author describes empathy as a skill and this has lso caused me to reflect as I have always consider it to be a trait ~ something we are born with. But then pyschopaths generally lack the ability to empathise, as do many top business leaders, as recent  studies have shown. So perhaps empathy is a skill that we are encouraged to use and develop in our early nurturing and onwards through life!

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 2, 2013 11:37 AM

I like the phrase that empathy is caught and not taught. Adults can model and encourage empathy.

Employee engagement is a significant problem in America as evidenced by a recent Gallup study that showed of the 100 million people in the US with full-time jobs, 70% are not engaged or are "actively disengaged" in their work.  And engagement has a direct impact on productivity and employee satisfaction.  Leaders must ensure their employees know they genuinely care for them and that their efforts are appreciated.  When leaders engage with their people, it not only benefits the employee and the organization, but there is growing evidence indicating that sharing positive messages with other people has a positive impact on the person delivering the message.  Start engaging today!

5 Leadership Lessons: Listen, Learn, Lead | Mindful Leadership & Intercultural Communication | Scoop.it

For a leader – or anyone else who wants to succeed at hiring and retaining the very best talent – listening is a crucial skill. Because when you tune the wrong people and information out, you’re depriving yourself of priceless tools that will enable you to take your career, and life, to new levels of workplace fulfillment, reward and fun.
