"Do you have an expensive but uncomfortable pair of shoes or jeans at the back of your cupboard that you never ever wear, but you simply cannot throw away because to do so would be to admit defeat and recognise that you wasted a lot of money? If so, you are suffering from the sunk-cost bias or fallacy."

How to Meditate: A Beginner's Guide

How to Meditate: A Beginner's Guide | Mindful Leadership & Intercultural Communication | Scoop.it
The in's and out's of meditation — what it is, why it's used, and the many benefits you can get from practicing it.

The word meditation can immediately conjure images of Buddhist monks in saffron robes or new-age beatniks in clouds of incense — which isn’t necessarily untrue. But meditation isn’t about religion per se, or even spirituality, really.

The BioSync Team's curator insight, October 20, 2013 3:59 PM

Meditation is about training your brain to bring your thoughts and feelings into awareness; it’s about examining who you are and your place in the world; it teaches you to appreciate every moment for what it is.

Meditating Your Way To More Effective Leadership

Meditating Your Way To More Effective Leadership | Mindful Leadership & Intercultural Communication | Scoop.it

The Drucker School of Management and Wharton Business School both offer courses in mindfulness meditation. Virginia Tech is sponsoring "contemplative practices for a technological society," a conference for engineers who integrate contemplative disciplines into their work. Google offers courses in meditation and yoga

Aetna, Merck, General Mills--the list goes on--all are exploring how meditation can help their leaders and employees agilely thrive in today's fast-paced business environment. And the benefits are widely publicized: sustained attention span, improved multi-tasking abilities, strengthened immune system, increased emotional intelligence, improved listening skills...And there is science behind such claims.

When top business schools highlight the importance of mindfulness with courses for future leaders, we now have precedence for including it in educational leadership training.

Focus, clarity, creativity, compassion, and courage. These are the qualities of the mindful leaders. They are also the qualities that give today’s best leaders the resilience to cope with the many challenges coming their way and the resolve to sustain long-term success.

The real point of leverage — which though it sounds simple, many executives never discover — is the ability to think clearly and to focus on the most important opportunities.

It concerns me when we see mindfulness as a "real point of leverage". That diminishes the meditative purpose underlying it and shifts it to a calculative way of thinking. Don't we already have enough of the latter and not enough of the former?

Peace Overtures's curator insight, March 11, 9:36 AM

The important thing is to have a regular introspective practice that takes you away from your daily routines and enables you to reflect on your work and your life — to really focus on what is truly important to you. By doing so, you will not only be more successful, you will be happier and more fulfilled in the long run.

Chris Shern's curator insight, March 12, 6:08 AM

Things are not changing as fast as the world around and within business. There are still far too many managers in a world with an increasing need for mindful leaders.
