Imagine the surprise of a European MP who recently received a letter from an 8 year old constituent complaining that she had been frightened by a horror film trailer broadcast before her bedtime. If our current rules for protection of minors from harmful TV content are still not watertight, what the countless hours of content made available on demand?

In an era where 72 hours of new content are uploaded to YouTube every minute, one may wonder just who the gatekeepers are. The European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, has just published a new IRIS plus report entitled:

Protection of minors and audiovisual content on-demand.

As our reading has become increasingly digital, opportunities for interaction have increased. Traditional forms of interacting with a text, such as note taking, have become social, networked practices, while entirely new practices are emerging. While readers have always been able to read a text in whatever order they choose, the hypertext nature of electronic reading has opened up new possibilities for non-linear storytelling, giving readers opportunities to find multiple paths through a text or other media.
