Are Schools on the Verge of a Mobile-Phone Revolution? - Education - GOOD

Are Schools on the Verge of a Mobile-Phone Revolution? - Education - GOOD | Interactive Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Smart phones are powerful computers in the hands of almost all of our college students - why are we not harnessing their potential in the formal learning environment?

Harvard professor Chris Dede, who's done extensive research on the issue, says that,
“We know from generations of work that devices are catalysts"—which means that while the mobile phones themselves aren't going to make kids learn. When teachers receive professional development on how to use mobile phones to enhance their regular lessons and combine that with, "changes in content, new forms of assessment, and linking people together," we'll start to see more adoption.

Socrative | Web based student response system and GREAT real time assessment tool!

Socrative | Web based student response system and GREAT real time assessment tool! | Interactive Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Socrative is a smart student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of learning exercises via smartphones, tablets and laptops.
Get a quick pulse-check at the end of the class by asking a few questions to gauge your students understanding of today's concepts - real time data! Or use it during class to engage students in quizzes, MQCs, games and lots more.
Teacher goes to t.socrative.com on any browser and creates a room identified by a numeral. Student goes to m.socrative.com and enters a "virtual room" number to log into class session and respond to the activity designed by teacher. Really a very useful tool for immediate assessment of student understanding!

What are some ways schools can use technology to get students more excited about learning? PURPOSE!

What are some ways schools can use technology to get students more excited about learning? PURPOSE! | Interactive Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
"I don’t think technology alone can get students to be “more excited” about learning. In fact, I would argue that using technology in school without a purpose does everyone involved in education an disservice."

Technology is a tool to support the achievement of a particular learning outcome! Finding the tool that best achieves the purpose of the learning activity is a point well made by the author of this blog. I would add that tapping into the students' PLNs so that they apply those tech skills in the formal learning environment is even more purposeful if the learning activities are assessed and thus tech skills embedded into the curriculum.
