Strategies for innovation in post-secondary education

Love this post by Tony Bates who adds a 6th to the list of strategies offered by Joshua Kim (from Inside Higher Ed post of 6 Feb 2012):

"1.Embrace that the Smartest Person on Campus is the Campus. (In other words, involve the whole campus through communication and collaboration)
2. Develop a Common Language Around Innovation: make sure everyone understands what innovation is and what it takes
3. Support the Core While Running Lots of Experiments
4. Practice Collaboration by Difference: put together people with different perspectives
5. Invest in a Continued Conversation: build mechanisms that ensure an ongoing conversation/discussion about change and improvement
6. Make innovation in teaching and learning a strategic goal of the organization."

How Does PBL Support Authentic Literacy?

"Project Based Learning offers one of the best ways to provide students in your classroom with authentic literacy experiences—which means having them read and write for a real purpose, as opposed to an “inauthentic” academic exercise. To incorporate authentic literacy, be sure to answer these questions when you design and implement a project:..."

Not all LEARNing is created equal!

The potential of education to make a real, meaningful difference to the lives of students is well-known to teachers familiar with the work of Dewey (even more so if you know a bit about Aristotle, Plato, and Confucius). But, it was Jack Mezirow that really flagged the need for institutions and educators to focus more on TRANSFORMATIONAL LEARNing – DEEP LEARNing on steroids!

A great post by Tony Gurr!

Digital Differentiation

"Technology is a tool that can be used to help teachers facilitate learning experiences that address the diverse learning needs of all students and help them develop 21st Century Skills. At it's most basic level, digital tools can be used to help students find, understand and use information. When combined with student-driven learning experiences fueled by Essential Questions offering flexible learning paths, it can be the ticket to success. Here is a closer look at three components of effectively using technology as a tool for digital differentiation."

Some very colourful and helpful resources from Susan  Oxnevad - an instructional tech facilitator in Oak Park, IL.

Very nice!

The Touch-Screen Classroom | The Committed Sardine

"Eric Moccio, an educator out of St. Catharines, ON, is hopeful in this article from MacLeans about technology in the classroom when he states, "“Education, unfortunately, is slow to mimic the real world, but it will.” I think we can all look forward to a time when things like BYOD and ed tech implementation become less of a challenge and more of a practiced pattern in our schools. Of course, working together, we can achieve anything."

QR Coded Student Videos: Classifying Activity

This is part of my continuing series of blogs about how I am integrating mobile learning into my undergraduate course on interpersonal relations. There are a dozen students in the class. Ten of them are in the 17 to 21 year old age range. The other two are over 35 years old. All of them own mobile devices – four of them being Smart Devices (iPhone, Android). Three of them bring their personal laptops to class.
The following activity was part of a three-hour class on nonverbal behaviors. Even though the example describes how this activity was used with the different types of nonverbal behaviors, it can be used with any topic that has categories or classifications.

How to Manage an Online Student Discussion

"The concept of blended learning has gone viral on the Internet and in classrooms. For those who aren’t familiar, blended learning is a method that takes traditional in-class teaching and interlaces it with an online element. The beautiful thing about blended learning is that it prepares students to be a digital citizen, which is a must-have skill in a society full of technology. One vital element to digital citizenship, and what is considered to be a 21st century skill, is the ability to communicate effectively. To be a great conversationalist, students must learn the ability to participate in deep, authentic discussions, and learning to do so online is just as important as face-to-face dialogue."

Author of this post, Paul Smith, offers some thoughts and ideas of how to get authentic student discussion going online.

Which university is No. 1 on iTunes U? (The Open University!)

"According to the BBC (and they can’t be wrong, can they?) it’s the U.K. Open University, with 40 million downloads so far:

Coughlan, S. (2012) Open University’s record iTunes U downloads, BBC News, October 3 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-15150319

Of course, it’s not quite as simple as that. The BBC thinks Stanford University and the OU must be running pretty close in terms of total downloads, but the OU is the clear winner in terms of the number of ‘hits’ it has running at one time."

Using Google Docs to Check In On Students' Reading - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education

"With nightly reading assignments that take three to four hours, I expect students to fall behind. So I wasn’t surprised when, a few days in, I asked if everyone had done all the reading and the majority of the class avoided looking at me. Such are the occupational hazards of teaching."

Brian Croxall offers some strategies for encouraging and tracking student reading so that class discussions can thrive. His use of Google docs is worthwhile sharing.

20 Essential TED Talks for Future Leaders | Online Universities

"If you want to get to the top in any field, whether it’s business, science, or even construction, you have to have some pretty solid leadership skills. Unfortunately, these kinds of skills often aren’t the sort of thing you’ll find being taught in your college courses, and may take some extra effort to learn and apply outside of your classes. While there is little substitute for leadership experience through campus organizations, hearing from experts on psychology, leadership, and business can also be a big help in giving you a basic leadership education. TED is one of the best places to find all of these diverse subjects in one place, and here we’ve collected some of the best videos for anyone, young or old, hoping to hone their leadership abilities."

9 Crowdsourced Ways To Create A Collaborative Multimedia Book | Edudemic

"While perusing my LinkedIn groups this morning, I came across a great question:

" Does anyone know of a cheap/free online resource or iPad app that students can use as a collaborative multimedia project book (text, video, jpegs) - preferably with privacy restrictions if online?"

The power of the crowd then kicked in and sprung into action. Dozens of responses have been left for Kirsten and they’re all quite excellent. Best of all, they’re from educators and education professionals I trust. So, here’s the list of helpful tools from the LinkedIn crowd. (Be sure to join the ‘Technology in Education’ LinkedIn group to take part in these discussions in the future!)"

Steve Wheeler offers some great advice on copyright and Creative Commons.

"Many people assume that because the web is open, any and all content is open for copying and reuse. It is not. Use some content and you could well be breaking copyright law. Many sites host copyrighted material, and many people are confused about what they can reuse or copy...."

The Educator’s Guide to Copyright, Fair Use, and Creative Commons | The Edublogger

"Lately, we’ve been hearing more and more about digital copyrights and fair use in the news and online – particularly with the whole SOPA/PIPA uproar that recently swept the web.

Also, we on the Edublogs support team have been getting more and more complaints and official requests to remove copyrighted content that users have placed on blogs.

The legal jargon with respect to digital copyrights can be confusing – especially since different countries have their own laws and regulations.

With this post, we hope to dispel a few myths and pull together a complete list of resources for teachers and students to use when blogging and working with content online."
