Learning to Learn in a New World

Learning to learn in a changing world.
Anne Whaits's insight:

Another superb presentation by @langwitches in which Silvia shares critical and powerful messages for all in T&L. Educators need to become learners; Schools need to become learning communities; We all need to develop Digital Fluencies. The context of learning is changing. Look around you, pay attention to our changing world and the shifts in culture affecting education. Time to think differently about learning.

A really great introduction to OER from Michael Paskevicius, University of Cape Town. Certainly will prove useful to those on the teaching team who have only recently started to explore the open movement and creative commons in particular.

Education 3.0 and the Pedagogy of Mobile Learning

Presentation about moving from Education 1.0 to Education 3.0; from pedagogy to andragogy to heutagogy; from instructivism to constructivism to connectivism in the context of mobile learning
Anne Whaits's insight:

@jackiegerstein shares a detailed presentation rich in resources - from pertinant research cited to a wealth of fit-for-purpose links. She explores what learning should be; provides some guiding principles and offers lots of analytical data that can evidence mobile trends. Her exploration of a new paradigm model: the Education 1.0 - 3.0 spectrum makes for interesting reading/viewing and I love the question she poses to the self-directed learner: "How would you document your learning?"

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy Explained

This is my presentation for MoRCE-NET conference. In this presentation I talked about the original Bloom's Taxonomy that was first published in 1956 by Benjamin Blooms and then I talked about the Revised Taxonomy introduced in 2000 by Andrew and Krathwohl . I also touched on the digital taxonomy and provided a practical example of how students can use it in conducting Google searches.
Anne Whaits's insight:

Med Kharbach (@medkh9) offers a useful screencast to explain the revision of Bloom's Taxonomy for the digital age.  He talks to the action and verbs associated with the classification of thinking skills in the revised taxonomy within the context of the digital age as suggested by Andrew Churches. Creativity positioned as higher order thinking skill (HOTS). How are you enabling your students to demonstrate their learning in creative ways using digital media?

Anne Whaits's insight:

Dr Jackie Gerstein shares a great presentation on The Flipped Classroom currently featured on SlideShare. A great presentation which reinforces the experential cycle of learning on which the "flip" is based. Strong case for shifting from old model of teaching to new model of learning in an age of information abundance. Read more on Jackie's website here: http://usergeneratededucation.wordpress.com/

D Cashore's comment, May 5, 7:36 PM
Not a fan based on my children's experience with the whole thing. It does not work the way it states. The classroom becomes a time of reteaching what was supposedly learned from the video the night before. The flipped classroom needs an incredible amount of training with highly skilled, and motivated teachers. I am not a fan.

Transitioning to Open Educational Resources

Transitioning to Open Educational Resources | Interactive Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Over the past two years, I've been working with my district to transition from the popular textbook towards Open Educational Resources, or OER. One of the leading benefits of OER options is that they are free and open to educators. That in itself is a reason to inquire. The information has been vetted for credibility and some of it is derived from some of the world's top colleges and universities.

Via Tom D'Amico (@TDOttawa)

Waldo D. Sanchez's comment, March 9, 6:27 AM
A transition that will not stop.
Patricia Daniels's curator insight, March 9, 7:46 AM

Making the transition to OERs can be quite daunting as it's not just a matter of accessing open content but repurposing it and digitizing your own to suit your students' needs. I find that using OERs in combination with cloud computing, mobile assisted seamless learning and field trips into virtual worlds, works well with my language students. However, what works within my teaching context may not be appropriate for yours. In my opinion, it's not just about introducing new technologies and pedagogies because they are trending, but doing a thorough analysis of what is needed within a specfic context before transforming your teaching practices, as these transformations  will influence your students' learning environment and learning outcomes.

Heather MacCorkle Edick's curator insight, April 2, 4:59 AM

It's good to know that the materials have been vetted.  Another good source for material is MERLOT.

The Padagogy Wheel ... it's a Bloomin' Better Way to Teach

The Padagogy Wheel ... it's a Bloomin' Better Way to Teach | Interactive Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

" Dr Ian Green from the School of Education here at Adelaide and I [Allan Carrington] have used Padagogy 101 (introduction to iPad in HE) and Padagogy 201 (more advanced use for L&T) to train over 600 faculty from universities in Australia. During my research I saw lots of great work done by others using Bloom’s Taxonomy including the Revised Taxonomy which has now become the Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy. However when I discovered the excellent pioneer work done by Kathy Schrock with “Bloomin’ Apps” I got the idea for the Padagogy Wheel. Dare I say it but it is the next version for mobile learning of the ongoing importance of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Bloom’s is still fundamental to good teaching and learning."

Anne Whaits's insight:

Allan Carrington (University of Adelaide, Australia) devised the Padagogy Wheel to support his work in training and developing faculty to use the iPad in higher education learning and teaching. I particularly like the non-linear presentation of thinking skills in this wheel. Do explore Allan's blog for other great resources including PADAGOGY 101, PADAGOGY 201 and more.

Flipping and Expanding Bloom's Taxonomy

Flipping and Expanding Bloom's Taxonomy | Interactive Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

"In 1956, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom and a group of other researchers created one of the enduring models of how learning should be structured and supported ......There is a definite place for a  flipping of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the world of education. Our understanding of  how people learn has changed and there is a premium on creativity that needs to  be encouraged. The traditional model is outdated and fails to account for some  of the realities of the 21st century. Adding a social constructivist  slant to Wright’s model helps to ensure that it won’t be outdated before it  even gains widespread acceptance." - Dr Justin Marquis

"MentorMob becomes truly innovative, and appealing to  educators, in the fact that the curated collections take the form of  "Learning Playlists." These playlists allow users to sequence the  resources they are gathering so that, rather than a random assemblage of information,  learners are presented with a logical progression of steps that helps them effectively  learn the concept, skill, or process that they have come to MentorMob to find  out about. Essentially, by relying on a community-based, crowdsourced approach  to developing instruction, MentorMob facilitates an effective and efficient way  for visitors to the site to learn just about anything."
