9 Best Tools to Optimize Animated GIFs | Intelligent Design | Scoop.it

Symbiotic Design's insight:
Let's face it, GIFs have their place.  They are much more compact than video, and many users are annoyed by unexpected audio from video on a page.  Over 80% of video on Facebook is watched without audio, so moving pictures do have their place.  But GIF files can be big, too.  Use these tools to reduce the load on visitors as well as your website's overhead.

World`s largest collection of free & royalty-free stock photos. Download from over 46 million stock photos, illustrations, vectors & videos.
Symbiotic Design's insight:
One of the issues in facing a blank computer screen is whether or not you will have any resources to use.  Images are available online, but you have to remember that you can't simply copy an image from the web and use it without permission.  You may wind-up violating someone's Copyright.

That's where stock photos, graphics and video footage comes in.  This is just one option of many offering free and low-cost royalty-free images.  Check Dreamtime out.  You can even make a little money selling your own photos online with them.

HTML5 and CSS3 - Adobe - The Expressive Web - Beta

The Expressive Web is an Adobe-curated resource website for the advocacy, support, and advancement of HTML5 and CSS3 web development.
Symbiotic Design's insight:

Adobe's "The Expressive Web" now in beta will be a boon for HTML5 and CSS3 design & development. Check out beta.theexpressiveweb.com

...on a side note, doesn't Adobe understand that using "the" in a domain name is an extremely poor branding choice?  Especially when the next word starts with an 'e' and "the" ends in an 'e'.

Adobe needs to save money by not ponying up for a premium brand domain name?  Since when?  I have Worthful.com as well as many others if they need help.

Seriously though, go check this out, Adobe may be able to take some of the headaches out of developing web pages that meet the HTML5 & CSS3 specs. Or will it just be another dream they weave and ask us to believe in?

7 Best SEO Website Design Tips

7 Best SEO Website Design Tips | Intelligent Design | Scoop.it
Top SEO web development best practices that you can’t afford to ignore. These simple, yet powerful tips will give you the unfair advantage.
Symbiotic Design's insight:
Search Engine Optimization (aka SEO) is the act of trying to manipulate the search engines into giving a particular website a better ranking in the search result listings by appeasing the algorithm search providers use to rank websites.  It is an incredibly difficult task that requires constant analysis and updating, and is split between shades of white hat (ethical) and black hat (unethical, extremely manipulative) techniques.

I personally don't strive to do SEO any longer, as I enjoy the creative process over the data-centric analytical process.  But for a web designer to offer a website that isn't optimized for human traffic by being user friendly and search optimized is a complete waste of a marketing investment (which is what a website is, a branding and digital marketing platform).

So as a web designer I seek out common sense creative solutions that are designed for humans (not for machines).  As such, not only are my sites user friendly, they are search engine friendly and the content is particularly optimized for search to present the data a human would require for that particular page subject.  This way, visitors are provided with the opportunity to discover content that is relative to them.

The article referenced here gives 7 decent tips on common sense ethical search optimization techniques (under the guise of SEO, which has become one of the biggest buzzwords - it's all marketing, after all).  But these are some good search optimization techniques to enhance a website's find-ability.

I have my own take on #2, Meta Tags, which is revealed at http://www.MetaTagSEO.com, and although all his other points are good avenues to pursue and learn more about, this article does point web designers in the right direction to find the best resources to utilize the best techniques and best web design practices that optimize a website for search.

It really is all just common sense, and I do use a whole list of guidelines that I try to uphold with each project so that each website stands the best chance in a competitive world.  But these 7 SEO tips for web designers are good ones.

Once the website is online, there is also promotion (announcing your presence to the world) and online marketing (extending the reach of your website as a marketing platform through advertising).  But those are different from search, they are PR and marketing.

Web Design Tips: 7 Common Web Typography Mistakes - HOW Design

Web Design Tips: 7 Common Web Typography Mistakes - HOW Design https://t.co/NXWExLrFX9 https://t.co/Gdkk2iwiJV
Symbiotic Design's insight:
I would add a couple of common website design mistakes to this list, but they aren't typographical, they are presentation optimization mistakes (not including a title and not using the meta description tag to describe what that particular page is about in a summary), but I mention them because they are too common, and we shouldn't forget.

We shouldn't forget these typographic website building issues, either.  Afterall, websites are marketing messages and offer the visitor an opportunity to interact with calls to action (that should be on every page offering your marketing message).
