(Empathic Parenting) (Teaching Empathy) The importance of helping your children to develop empathy | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it

Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another being is experiencing from within the other being’s frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in another’s position. Empathy moves us to share in another’s pain, to really see the world through their eyes. When we do, it very often changes the kind of decisions and actions we take.

There are many definitions for empathy which encompass a broad range of emotional states. Types of empathy include

  • cognitive empathy,
  • emotional empathy, and
  • somatic empathy.

Teaching Empathy

  1. Treat children as individuals with minds of their own,
  2. Model empathy...
  3. Make kids aware of the similarities they share with others....
  4. Empathy involves perspective taking skills...
  5. Make a face....
  6. More oxytocin, “the bonding hormone”, can help better decode emotional meaning in facial expressions....
  7. Reassessment of the Milgram Experiments –Moral Disengagement...
  8. Express your feelings openly...
  9. Emotional vocabulary is key...
  10. Monitor and guide media use...

Es una verdad comprobada por toda la investigación sobre comunicación (por ejemplo, en el caso del autismo) que la inteligencia racional no funciona nunca bien sin que a la vez el cerebro use la inteligencia emocional. Por eso hay que cultivar la empatía.

Hubble finds planet orbiting pair of stars

Hubble finds planet orbiting pair of stars | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, and a trick of nature, have confirmed the existence of a planet orbiting two stars in the system OGLE-2007-BLG-349, located 8,000 light-years away towards the center of our galaxy.

The planet orbits roughly 300 million miles from the stellar duo, about the distance from the asteroid belt to our sun. It completes an orbit around both stars roughly every seven years. The two red dwarf stars are a mere 7 million miles apart, or 14 times the diameter of the moon's orbit around Earth.

The Hubble observations represent the first time such a three-body system has been confirmed using the gravitational microlensing technique. Gravitational microlensing occurs when the gravity of a foreground star bends and amplifies the light of a background star that momentarily aligns with it. The particular character of the light magnification can reveal clues to the nature of the foreground star and any associated planets.

The three objects were discovered in 2007 by an international collaboration of five different groups: Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA), the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), the Microlensing Follow-up Network (MicroFUN), the Probing Lensing Anomalies Network (PLANET), and the Robonet Collaboration. These ground-based observations uncovered a star and a planet, but a detailed analysis also revealed a third body that astronomers could not definitively identify.

"The ground-based observations suggested two possible scenarios for the three-body system: a Saturn-mass planet orbiting a close binary star pair or a Saturn-mass and an Earth-mass planet orbiting a single star," explained David Bennett of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the paper's first author.

The sharpness of the Hubble images allowed the research team to separate the background source star and the lensing star from their neighbors in the very crowded star field. The Hubble observations revealed that the starlight from the foreground lens system was too faint to be a single star, but it had the brightness expected for two closely orbiting red dwarf stars, which are fainter and less massive than our sun. "So, the model with two stars and one planet is the only one consistent with the Hubble data," Bennett said.

In a Parched Corner of Xinjiang, Ancient Water Tunnels Are Running Dry

In a Parched Corner of Xinjiang, Ancient Water Tunnels Are Running Dry | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it
TURPAN, China — It is an improbable journey that begins on the highest peaks of the Tianshan Mountains, where glacial snowmelt descends across one of the world’s most arid landscapes to reach the lush oasis communities of this ancient Silk Road outpost.

Powered by gravity, the water — pure and cold — makes the entire voyage underground, traveling through scores of subterranean channels, some of them 15 miles long and 100 feet deep, that were built 2,000 years ago by the pastoralists who settled this inhospitable corner of China’s far western Xinjiang region.

Saberes Sin Fronteras OVS's insight:

Digital dawn: open online learning is just beginning

Digital dawn: open online learning is just beginning | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it

In contrast to traditional higher education, which closes learning off from the world, open learning is transparent and accessible to anyone with internet access. Such openness could do a lot to improve standards at universities whose business models are driven by bums on seats, rather than mastery of a given subject. It might also lift the morale of academia. Academics who are in control of what they teach, and who teach students who seek them out, may regain their professional freedom. Around 7,000 online students recently earned the first certificates awarded by MIT and Harvard through their Edx partnership. That’s more than twice the number of degrees that MIT awarded at this year’s commencement. Another 147,596 observers signed up to marvel at what an MIT course is really like. Substantially greater numbers are expected for the spring course offerings. Their first MIT course, Circuits and Electronics, was tough. University level maths and physics were prerequisites, and the exam would give many no asebleeds.
