Carol Dweck Explains The “False” Growth Mindset That Worries Her | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU

Carol Dweck Explains The “False” Growth Mindset That Worries Her | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU  | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it
False growth mindset is saying you have growth mindset when you don’t really have it or you don’t really understand [what it is]. It’s also false in the sense that nobody has a growth mindset in everything all the time. Everyone is a mixture of fixed and growth mindsets. You could have a predominant growth mindset in an area but there can still be things that trigger you into a fixed mindset trait.

Something really challenging and outside your comfort zone can trigger it, or, if you encounter someone who is much better than you at something you pride yourself on, you can think “Oh, that person has ability, not me.” So I think we all, students and adults, have to look for our fixed-mindset triggers and understand when we are falling into that mindset.

I think a lot of what happened [with false growth mindset among educators] is that instead of taking this long and difficult journey, where you work on understanding your triggers, working with them, and over time being able to stay in a growth mindset more and more, many educators just said, “Oh yeah, I have a growth mindset” because either they know it’s the right mindset to have or they understood it in a way that made it seem easy.

More teachers today are providing opportunities for their students to connect and learn in powerful ways. There is an increasing focus on collaboration, competency-based learning, use of open resources, project-based learning, and learning environments are shifting to support these new opportunities. Voltage, Current, Resistance, and Ohm's Law | #Electricity #Electronics  | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it
Electricity Basics

When beginning to explore the world of electricity and electronics, it is vital to start by understanding the basics of voltage, current, and resistance. These are the three basic building blocks required to manipulate and utilize electricity. At first, these concepts can be difficult to understand because we cannot “see” them.

One cannot see with the naked eye the energy flowing through a wire or the voltage of a battery sitting on a table. Even the lightning in the sky, while visible, is not truly the energy exchange happening from the clouds to the earth, but a reaction in the air to the energy passing through it. In order to detect this energy transfer, we must use measurement tools such as multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and oscilloscopes to visualize what is happening with the charge in a system.

Fear not, however, this tutorial will give you the basic understanding of voltage, current, and resistance and how the three relate to each other.

Three Tools for Teaching Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills | #IntegrativeTHINKing

Three Tools for Teaching Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills | #IntegrativeTHINKing | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it
As the world economy shifts away from manufacturing jobs and towards service industry and creative jobs, there’s a consensus among parents, educators, politicians and business leaders that it is crucial students graduate into university or the workforce with the ability to identify and solve complex problems, think critically about information, work effectively in teams and communicate clearly about their thinking.

Originally developed by Rotman’s former dean, Roger Martin, integrative thinking is a broad term to describe looking for solutions through the tensions inherent in different viewpoints. Martin noticed that effective CEOs understood that their own world view was limited, so they sought out opposing viewpoints and came to creative solutions by leveraging seemingly opposing positions. For the past seven years, a spin-off group called the I-Think Initiative has been training teachers in the Toronto area on how integrative thinking can build critical thinking in students from a young age.

Smart Strategies That Help Students Learn How to Learn

Smart Strategies That Help Students Learn How to Learn | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it
Teaching students good learning strategies would ensure that they know how to acquire new knowledge, which leads to improved learning outcomes, writes lead author Helen Askell-Williams of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. And studies bear this out. Askell-Williams cites as one example a recent finding by PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, which administers academic proficiency tests to students around the globe, and place American students in the mediocre middle. “Students who use appropriate strategies to understand and remember what they read, such as underlining important parts of the texts or discussing what they read with other people, perform at least 73 points higher in the PISA assessment—that is, one full proficiency level or nearly two full school years—than students who use these strategies the least,” the PISA report reads.

Bill Gates thinks this should be the future of education | #PersonalizedLEARNing #LEARNing2LEARN | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it
In a blog post, Bill Gates explores personalized learning.

Not only do kids get to learn at their own pace, which gives them more confidence, but teachers at Summit get matched with students who they'll mentor for all four years. Instructors can use in-house software to see which of their dozen or so students has completed certain assignments and exams.

The end result is that kids don't have many opportunities to slip through the cracks. And by taking an active role in their education, they learn responsibility and self-reliance.

"I love that approach," Gates says. "When students get out in the world, they have to organize their own time, have goals, and realize what they’re behind on. It's fantastic to see them getting a head start on those skills in school."

How to Push the Boundaries of School with Dynamic Learning | Shake Up Learning | #ModernLEARNing | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it
Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamic.

This concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.

The author shares the idea about going beyond the mere fact of being learning only in the classroom. His thoughts on being more autonomous when implementing tools which provide the learners with the opportunity to practice at home leaves a space to consider the way we are making the education happen nowadays. Thereupon, I agree with the consideration about having learners dig deeper into their learning on their own terms with the tecnological devices found in this new era and let them dig deeper on things the are interested in the most.

David Alzate's curator insight, September 17, 6:18 PM
This article advices teachers to help their students see learning as an entire life process, and that with all the tools we have available today it does not have to be boring, limited or seen as a burden. Instead, teachers can help them power and further a mindset of proactivity and independence in learning. It means that the children, teenagers or adults in a class can come to understand ,with their teacher’s help, that learning does not always mean to have a board and a teacher in front of a classroom. This article notes that it is of high importance for teachers to constantly be updated in all the new tools that are available for education, and to learn how to use them beyond the common and old way. In this new, connected and more globalized world, learning does not have to stop necessarily when the school day or year ends, it can be at any time, and also interesting and exciting; the deal here is to have teachers and therefore students thinking out of the box, and seeing education notas a burden or a must, but an enjoyable process insofar as this mindset is well provided and spread.

Models For Designing Your Personal Learning Environment | LEARNingPath

Models For Designing Your Personal Learning Environment | LEARNingPath | INTELIGENCIA GLOBAL | Scoop.it

A personal learning environment (PLE) is a solution for keeping up with the rapid pace of knowledge change. Some say it is a concept, while others say it is a technology.

I think a good definition is this: a self-directed and evolving environment of tools, services and resources organized by a person seeking a way to accomplish lifetime learning, to create, and to connect with others of similar interests.

Because it is personalized, everyone’s PLE will be unique. Because it is collaborative, information may be continually created and shared. In the workplace, designing a personal learning environment has the potential to partially replace conventional courses.
