#ContentCuration : What Makes a Good Content Curator?

#ContentCuration : What Makes a Good Content Curator? | Curación de contenidos e Inteligencia Competitiva | Scoop.it

Excerpted from the article:
"Sharing good content shows you understand what’s interesting and valuable to your target markets. It will help you increase your followers and establish your credibility.
A good content curator has to sift through tons of content, quickly and efficiently, finding what is both relevant and good quality.

So what does a good content curator look like?
1) Really Long Arms:
You have the expanded reach to know the smaller players with a unique perspective, the powerhouse publishers, and all of the niche players. This allows for a healthy variety of content, with differing perspectives.

2) Super Fast Scanning Eyes:
An efficient content curator knows how to scan an article for legitimacy, value, and relevance to their target market.

3) A Raised Eyebrow:
Each time you come upon something new, your eyebrow is already up, because you’re there to sniff it out to make sure it’ll pass the test. People will lose interest in what you share and you will hurt your credibility if you share content that isn’t high quality.

4) A Belly Full of Hunger:
Good content curators love what they do and are passionate about traversing the wide expanse of the web to find the best content possible."

Robin Good's insight:

Lindsey Weintraub at SocialMediaToday has a short but valuable guide to four key traits a good curator really needs to have.

From the ability to search and tap into sources that should not be what everyone else is looking at, to the ability to know in and out its chosen niche of interest and its players, the good content curator has an uncanny talent for scanning, selecting and triple-verifying anything potentially interesting before even considering showcasing in its selections.

Rightful. Good for anyone just starting out with curation. 7/10

LynnॐT's curator insight, February 13, 2013 9:33 AM

"Now, marketing communications must be framed by the conversation, and not just by the marketer, but by all the parties to the conversation. This requires curation.

Someone has to be the raconteur, the one who shares anecdotes in a skillful, amusing and engaging manner. Someone has to either begin or redirect a conversation; to put it on a path. The definition of that path, what we’re going to talk about, teed up in a thoughtful, strategic way, but never in a way that is didactic. Shaping and guiding conversation in a very intentional but seemingly unintentional way will be one of the requisite gifts of the great brand curators.

The other role the curator plays is that of succeeding at rallying other good raconteurs to the conversation stream. It’s not quite the heavy-handed role that a museum curator plays in deciding what gets into the exhibit, or not, but similar. The social media stream curator spots participants and content that ought to be served to the conversation and encourages it into the stream. Like the museum curator, the brand curator says to the interlocutors, “Here’s what we’re talking about. Let me highlight this good observation or example. What do you have to share?”

Having lived through this era at one of the papers on this list. I can attest to much that is stated in this article. People simply digest content the way they want to now, not the way that publishers want it delivered. People now have the power to seek out the content that they want. They can now deliver, create and share content with the many tools avialable. The shift of content power will continue.

Newspapers are doing the best they can to deliver and create content to readers. The problem is, they typically resort to old methods or try to recreate something that user does not want.

I am still convinced that newspapers can thrive in a content rich environment. Perhaps the key is adding value to the print media experience. Although it may seem counter intuitive (what's the value add?) newspapers can act as gatekeepers to content using technology like augmented reality. The use of mobile devices like Smartphones can allow readers of niche publications at least to access further granularity of information through scanning a page and linking to online content. Using this model newspapers or specialist publications can become gatekeepers, sort of print content curators if you will. People (at least some demographics like those over 50) still like the comfort of print, the key is adding value.
