Knowledge & life turning today into a (google) search. Algorithms are key!

Stephen Dale's curator insight, March 26, 2014 4:35 AM

"We are in the era of the algorithm. They decide what news we will see, they decide which person is important and they will even merge more and more into our non-digital lives.

But the biggest and realest danger lies in us. If we believe that there is only one truth and that is the one generated by a black-box algorithm we might be deceived easily."

A reminder, then, that algorithm's should not take the place of critical thinking.

I supposed twitter can be used or any tool can be used for anything, but some tools are made with certain intended affordance by the creator that would make the tool less effective for certain functions. curation in a way is capturing things void of time (i probably drawing too much from museum), while twitter is fast pace timeline of interactive (or one way) discourse.... they seems to be inherently different.

i'm just automatically sceptical when 'one tool can be use for all' theme appear. but it is an interesting suggestion.

Many people learn one tool and then move on to others. I like to analyze each and use the best features of that particular 2.0 project. I use twitter as a push tool to share info for the most part.

Robin Good's insight:

Here's a valuable resource on content curation, "distilled" by the students of the DCurate MOOC lead Martin Couzins and Sam Burrough which organizes over 60 different articles, guides and tools on the topic.

This resources collection is presented in the form of a Pearltrees interactive map, organized into eight sections:

1. Why Do We Need Curators

2. What Is Digital Curation

3. Aggregation vs. Curation

4. It's All About Audience

5. How Do We Find Valuable Content

6. How Do You Decide What To Curate

7. Curation Tools

8. Contributions from participants

If you are new to content curation this is a good resource to bookmark and keep as a reference.

Howard Rheingold's curator insight, September 3, 2013 4:35 PM

When I wrote Smart Mobs in 2001, I ended up with pages of text that I had culled, both quotes and my own drafts. I highlighted key passages and then underlined the core of the key passages. I arranged the pages in stacks of related material and created indexes for the stacks on index cards. Then I shuffled the stacks around on my desk. Scrivener has a useful index card view. Gingko combines mindmapping with indexcarding. When trying to organize complex, clumping collections of info, this could be a useful infotention tool -- I haven't tried it yet.

The more sources of information you tame, the more well rounded your curation becomes.

There can be filter bubbles (blind spots), and THEN there's just plain getting the best on a topic using the best tools.  Content curation and Robin Good's insights help. ~ D
