More Music, More Empathy

More Music, More Empathy | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

The previous post examined the relationship between music and empathy, including the emotional connection that can occur between musician and audience. My thoughts on the issue were originally inspired by a quote in the book Rat Girl, a memoir by musician Kristin Hersh:...

Are Musicians More Empathetic?

Self-absorbed rock star stereotype aside, it would be difficult to determine causality if this were the case. Do more empathetic people choose to take up music (à la the tortured artist), or does musical training make one more empathetic?

We’ve sifted through our personal library, a decade’s worth of obsessive reading, to bring you seven essential books on the art and science of happiness, rooted in solid science, contemporary philosophy and cross-disciplinary insight

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I'm an obsessive reader.  However, I haven't read books about Happiness.  Of the books recommended here, I've only read (or skimmed) one: The art of happiness.  More often than not, I use this book like a fortune cookie.  I open to a random page and contemplate what I read.

Patient Experience Empathy + Innovation

Patient Experience Empathy + Innovation | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Patient experience has emerged as a dynamic issue for healthcare CEOs, physicians, and industry leaders. No provider can afford to offer anything less than the best clinical, physical and emotional experience to patients and families. As patients become savvier, they judge healthcare providers not only on clinical outcomes, but also on their ability to be compassionate and deliver excellent, patient-centered care.

The Patient Experience: Empathy and Innovation Summit is a three-day, multidisciplinary conference devoted to exploring patient experience as a key differentiator essential to the future of healthcare delivery. Click here to see the agenda from the May 20-22, 2012 Summit. The Summit will feature expert panel discussions about the national patient experience movement, providing participants from all disciplines the opportunity to identify shared challenges and inspire innovative solutions to help transform the patient experience and elevate customer satisfaction as a competitive differentiator.

The man who prescribes the medicine of the moment | Mindful

The man who prescribes the medicine of the moment | Mindful | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

The story has been told many times of how Kabat-Zinn ended up teaching people in a hospital function-room to eat a raisin as if for the first time, to scan each and every area of their body, to stretch, turn, twist, breathe, walk, and above all pay attention to moment after moment after moment.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

As a veteran of MBSR I can say Kabat-Zinn's ideas have made my life better. Ironically, I did the raisin work (Hersey's Kiss too) with my middle school kids as a prewriting lesson way back in the 80's. We'd regularly do guided meditations as well.  What strikes me know, is that I knew nothing about mindfulness or meditation at the time. I was just looking for a way to help my students focus on the moment then capture their thinking with words.

U.S. Marines Overcome PTSD with Transcendental Meditation®

U.S. Marines Overcome PTSD with Transcendental Meditation® | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

The rapidly growing interest among the military in the ancient practice has been spurred by modern science.

A study published in Military Medicine in 2011 found that veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who practiced the TM technique experienced a 50 percent reduction in symptoms of PTSD after just eight weeks of meditating.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I learned of a similar study at Scripps where Marines at Camp Pendleton found help with PSTD by experiencing healting touch and meditation. There's good science backing up these claims.  We also know this kindof work is highly cost effective.  Here's a humane way to cut the cost of health care while helping soldiers regain their humanity.

Radiating a convincing presence, like Andy has in this video, communicates having deep and passionate convictions. Real presence is not a superficial facade or manipulated image; it is an expression of his authentic being. How can you help but notice his assuredness and his character.

Mindfulness or contemplation over time will reveal the true character of a person.

"...we are called to stop, to choose silence and to open and let ourselves be opened to our inner depths where the Spirit of God allows us to feel, see and understand life and reality with God's heart.... Then in the secret place of the heart the Spirit gradually transforms our feelings and responses, and draws us into an intimate relationship with God." (#RSCJ2008Chapter)

Amazing results can be obtained when an environment is created whereby communication, learning, creativity, awareness, consistency, passion and intelligence is applied.

Research is finally beginning to show that with the right environment, patients who once were thought by the medical and scientific community to be "lost causes" can now be helped.

Science established what's been known for centuries: our mind bodies are real.  As a westerner, I'm deeply touched by scientific research.  I find this all very reassuring.  The path I'm on is real (on multiple levels).
