Shambhala Sun - Getting Started (How to Meditate / September 2010)

Shambhala Sun - Getting Started (How to Meditate / September 2010) | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Zen teacher Norman Fischer proposes a two-week trial run to get your meditation practice started and looks at some of the obstacles that may come up.

"In short, if you want to meditate there is virtually no excuse not to. But human confusion is very clever, so it is still possible to talk yourself out of it. If so, be my guest. Sometimes that’s the way to finally begin serious meditation practice: by not doing it for ten or twenty years, until finally there is no choice."

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This approach was my way in. My teacher Karen Sothers gave me this article.  I set my intention to get up early and begin the day with at least 20 minutes of meditation. This soon evolved to 30 minutes to about an hour. It's two months now and morning meditation is one of my priorities.

I feel better.  I hope you can use this way in to feel better too.

Human Brain Is Wired for Harmony | Wired Science | Wired.com | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Stop that noise! Many creatures, such as human babies, chimpanzees, and chicks, react negatively to dissonance—harsh, unstable, grating sounds. Since the days of the ancient Greeks, scientists have wondered why the ear prefers harmony. Now, scientists suggest that the reason may go deeper than an aversion to the way clashing notes abrade auditory nerves; instead, it may lie in the very structure of the ear and brain, which are designed to respond to the elegantly spaced structure of a harmonious sound.

Deer Park Monastery, Escondido, CA

Here at Deer Park, we do very much the same things as when we are at home--walking, sitting, working, eating, etc.- except now we learn to do them in mindfulness, with an awareness that we are doing it. We practice mindfulness throughout every moment of the day and not just in the meditation hall, but also in the kitchen, the toilet, in our rooms and on the path leading from one place to another.

It is the little things.

As Buddha shared in the Kalama Sutra:

However, after thorough observation, investigation, analysis and reflection, when you find that anything agrees with reason and your experience, and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, and of the world at large; accept only that as true, and shape your life in accordance with it; and live up to it.
