How to read the genome and build a human being

How to read the genome and build a human being | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Secrets, disease and beauty are all written in the human genome, the complete set of genetic instructions needed to build a human being. Now, as scientist and entrepreneur Riccardo Sabatini shows us, we have the power to read this complex code, predicting things like height, eye color, age and even facial structure — all from a vial of blood. And soon, Sabatini says, our new understanding of the genome will allow us to personalize treatments for diseases like cancer. We have the power to change life as we know it. How will we use it?
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

When asked, "Do you want to know your genes?"  What do you answer?  Is it better to know or not know?

I like this response to the question: "How will I (we) use it?"

Dr. Dan Siegel - Books - Parenting From The Inside Out | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
How many parents have found themselves thinking: I can't believe I just said to my child the very thing my parents used to say to me! Am I just destined to repeat the mistakes of my parents? In Parenting from the Inside Out, child psychiatrist Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., and early childhood expert Mary Hartzell, M.Ed., explore the extent to which our childhood experiences actually do shape the way we parent.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

AIHM President’s Choice: Mindfulness Practices Dramatically Reduce Hospital Visits

AIHM President’s Choice: Mindfulness Practices Dramatically Reduce Hospital Visits | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
“The data suggests that the intervention should be applied to all at risk populations, since the intervention has minimal risk, minimal cost and yields substantial benefits for patients with a wide variety of illnesses. The long-term effect of these interventions on healthy populations is unclear, but the data suggests that mind body interventions should perhaps be instituted as a form of preventative care similar to vaccinations or driver education. Such interventions are likely to be useful in population management and supported self-care, have negligible risk and cost and may help reduce the demand curve in healthcare. While the risk benefit ratio of this intervention is very favorable to further elucidate the effect size a prospective evaluation is called for.”
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Dr. Adrian Willams: "Those of us reading emails late into the evening and checking our feeds in bed might also consider giving ourselves a break before bedtime. What strategies can we use? Florence Williams: This Is Your Brain on Nature

Florence Williams: This Is Your Brain on Nature | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
There wasn’t much hard evidence then—but there is now. Motivated by large-scale public health problems such as obesity, depression, and pervasive nearsightedness, all clearly associated with time spent indoors, Strayer and other scientists are looking with renewed interest at how nature affects our brains and bodies. Building on advances in neuroscience and psychology, they’ve begun to quantify what once seemed divine and mysterious. These measurements—of everything from stress hormones to heart rate to brain waves to protein markers—indicate that when we spend time in green space, “there is something profound going on,” as Strayer puts it.
