How to Focus a Wandering Mind

How to Focus a Wandering Mind | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

However, the practice is really meant to highlight this natural trajectory of the mind, and in doing so, it trains your attention systems to become more aware of the mental landscape at any given moment, and more adept at navigating it. With repeated practice, it doesn’t take so long to notice that you’ve slipped into some kind of rumination or daydream. It also becomes easier to drop your current train of thought and return your focus to the breath. Those who practice say that thoughts start to seem less “sticky”—they don’t have such a hold on you..

An excellent short overview of the benefits of conscious metacognitive exercise -- the attentional side of infotention. There's a lot of touchy-feely and neurobollocks about metacognition and meditation lately.

David McGavock's curator insight, July 19, 2013 5:54 PM

"when people’s minds were wandering, they tended to be less happy, presumably because our thoughts often tend towards negative rumination or stress."

That is presuming a lot since meditation affects our minds on so many levels. Familiarity with our thought process helps us to realize that we are not solid and that change/flux is the norm. It helps us realize that we have some control; albeit paradoxical control. Meditation slows our reactivity to people events and helps us appreciate our lives and other people. That's what I've experienced anyway.

Mindfulness, Gratitude & Appreciation=Thankfulness

Mindfulness, Gratitude & Appreciation=Thankfulness | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

From Ozzie Gontang:

Laura Fine taught me what it means to have an Attitude of Gratitude. Appreciation has been shared by so many patients who have been part of the Healing Hearts and Lifestyle Change Program at Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. These gifts have been shared so deeply by my family and friends over the years. Today I am mindful of the love of my family as Kip and I visit Erin & John, Allison & Takaki this Thanksgiving here in Boston.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Thank you Ozzie for mindful reminder on this national day of Thanksgiving!

My heart has been healed.

My lifestyle has changed.

I am thankful for all that you do.

Walking Meditation | Mindful Walking

Walking Meditation | Mindful Walking | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Walking meditation, also called mindful walking, combines the basic principles of meditation, such as breathing, concentration and relaxation with rhythmic walking. “As with traditional meditation, walking meditation can reduce your blood pressure and heart rate, create feelings of well-being, help you sleep, improve your mood and help you manage stress,” says Shirley Archer, a fitness expert who teaches walking meditation workshops at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This article presents 5 practices to help you into mindful walking.  The third practice "Find a Mantra" rang my memory bell and helped be understand that all the years I spent hiking and climbing were in so many way mindful walking.

I used the mountaineer's rest step and a simple chant to climb high passes with a heavy pack. It was very hard work that on occassion lead to bliss.

Thinking back on those experiences fills my mind with ease. My travel memories are a rich library. Evoking the best of them makes now a more mindful place.

The bamboo homes of Bali

CBS Sunday Morning: Published on May 18, 2014

On the tropical island of Bali, Indonesia, there are homes tucked into the jungle that look like something out of a fairytale. They're designed to have soaring roof lines, few walls or windows - and nearly everything is fashioned from bamboo. Seth Doane reports.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

These beautiful homes are sustainable works of art found on the Island of Bali.

This expression is rooted in the Green School, a private school built mostly from bamboo.  It's bright bit of hope from Bali for the 300 students who learn there.

Meditation - Alaska the Beautiful

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

My wife Jan and I just returned from a cruise through the Inland Passage that took us from Vancouver B.C. to Glacier Bay National Park.  We were there just a few days ago. This video from YouTube helped take me back. Special thanks to photographer Betty Higgins for this fine slideshow.

Being surrounded by Alaskan wilderness evoked the a sense of place we had during our many years living at in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  More than once I was reminded of sailing in Emerald Bay at Tahoe. The sheer granite, the waterfalls, the deep color of the water all under a blue sky.

Imagine unraveling the shoreline of Tahoe and stretching it out 30,000 miles and you begin to feel the enormity of Alaska. Part of that California feeling was no  due to  sunny weather. This was a tropical cruise to Alaska.  Clear skies and hot sun were daily gifts.

Meditating at Glacier Bay.. the ice sliding by the side of the ship, the birds roosting on the cliffs, the crackle and ping of glacier ice dissolving in sea water,  seals basking on the ice, the sudden crack and roar of a calving glacier...

...what better place to step out of time?

10 Steps to Awakening Self-Compassion | The Chopra Center

10 Steps to Awakening Self-Compassion | The Chopra Center | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

Self-compassion involves becoming aware of the presence of suffering in our bodies, emotions, thoughts, and actions—and then taking steps to diminish the suffering.

Compassion is the natural and spontaneous feeling that arises when we witness suffering, and that triggers our taking action to alleviate the suffering. While it may sound easy, practicing compassion for ourselves is the more difficult of the two. Creating a practice to integrate self-compassionate feelings into your life can heal your mind and body, and open your heart to new heights.

The Academy initiative of ABIHM and Mimi Guarneri, M.D.: new collaborative platform?

An end of year development may have the most significant impact on the field going forward. The American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine, in partnership with integrative cardiologist Mimi Guarneri, M.D. and her connection to the Calgary-based Taylor Family Foundation, are imagining the development of a multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder global platform for education, certification and policy advancement for integrative health and medicine. Such a dream is not new. What sets this apart is the relationship with what is rumored to be potentially an 8-digit level of philanthropic investment. This "Academy," is it is being called, could be an exciting engine for unity and growth.

5 Simple Tips to Encourage Empathy In Your Kids

5 Simple Tips to Encourage Empathy In Your Kids | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

Empathy has so many benefits, both for our kids and for more effective parenting. For instance:

  • Children get along better with other kids because they can put themselves in their shoes.
  • Children learn to regulate their emotions, such as during meltdowns and when they’re over excited.
  • Children can separate other people’s emotions from theirs. For instance, a child may get upset when he sees another child cry. But with empathy, he learns that the other child is the one who really needs help.

Below are effective ways of teaching our kids to show empathy:

  • #1: Create a happy home....
  • #2: Discuss being in other people’s shoes....
  • #3: Highlight common interests and feelings....
  • #4: Mention how their actions affect others....
  • #5: Model empathy...

This digital bonanza is freaking us out. What kind of humans are we becoming when our faces are smashed into screens?  Will technology make us a more or less empathetic society?  Can computers feel love?  The time for hand wringing or opting out is over.  The sooner we realize that we can’t stop this speeding bus -all we can do is try to drive it where it needs to go – the better off we will be.
