Telesangha | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
You wake up, roll out of bed and start your morning routine. Its 6:55am and you know at 7am your phone is going to ring. This is the time you committed to honoring your meditation practice. You settle into your meditation cushion and take a couple breaths. 7am your phone rings, you answer and are instantly connected to your meditation teacher, and eight others that have made the same commitment to meditating daily. This is your daily meditation group. You place the phone on speaker and set it off to the side. You follow the instruction as your teacher guides you through a secular mindful meditation. Your teacher and group are there to support you - providing structure, inspiration and accountability as you overcome the various stages of habit formation. You remember when you first started how difficult it was but now how this time is sacred and a time you cherish daily.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This is a phone supported meditation program that links you to a live teacher in a small (on the phone) cohort.  Interesting concept!

Meditation - Alaska the Beautiful

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

My wife Jan and I just returned from a cruise through the Inland Passage that took us from Vancouver B.C. to Glacier Bay National Park.  We were there just a few days ago. This video from YouTube helped take me back. Special thanks to photographer Betty Higgins for this fine slideshow.

Being surrounded by Alaskan wilderness evoked the a sense of place we had during our many years living at in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  More than once I was reminded of sailing in Emerald Bay at Tahoe. The sheer granite, the waterfalls, the deep color of the water all under a blue sky.

Imagine unraveling the shoreline of Tahoe and stretching it out 30,000 miles and you begin to feel the enormity of Alaska. Part of that California feeling was no  due to  sunny weather. This was a tropical cruise to Alaska.  Clear skies and hot sun were daily gifts.

Meditating at Glacier Bay.. the ice sliding by the side of the ship, the birds roosting on the cliffs, the crackle and ping of glacier ice dissolving in sea water,  seals basking on the ice, the sudden crack and roar of a calving glacier...

...what better place to step out of time?

Social Emotional Learning and Mindfulness-based Contemplative Practices in Education - What Meditation Really Is

Social Emotional Learning and Mindfulness-based Contemplative Practices in Education - What Meditation Really Is | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

A Meditation from the Field from Linda Lantieri and Madhavi Nambiar

Mr. Gray, an educator in his second year of teaching in New York City wrote out his resignation letter and left it on his desk. As a final measure, he chose to attend a Renewal and Restoration Retreat for Educators provided by The Inner Resilience Program – a nonprofit organization started right after September 11, 2001 to help teachers in Lower Manhattan begin to heal and recover from the tragic events of that day. He felt he had nothing to lose. “I was so tired of trying to balance the pressures I was feeling, I wanted to quit. After the retreat I went home and ripped up the resignation letter sitting on my desk. I found that place in me that knows why I wanted to be a teacher in the first place.”

» Mindfulness & Meditation: Resting in Stillness - World of Psychology | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

Two broad categories of results can sum up most people’s purposes for meditating. The first is to fully experience the present moment and to encounter thoughts and bodily sensations without judgment. The second is to enter a place of calmness away from the reactivity that can overwhelm us.

One meditator sails into the maelstrom, the other seeks a temporary shelter from the storm. The most interesting thing is that each result comes from the same basic techniques. So what the meditator seeks, and how much time he or she is willing to put into it, determines the outcome.

How to Focus a Wandering Mind

How to Focus a Wandering Mind | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

However, the practice is really meant to highlight this natural trajectory of the mind, and in doing so, it trains your attention systems to become more aware of the mental landscape at any given moment, and more adept at navigating it. With repeated practice, it doesn’t take so long to notice that you’ve slipped into some kind of rumination or daydream. It also becomes easier to drop your current train of thought and return your focus to the breath. Those who practice say that thoughts start to seem less “sticky”—they don’t have such a hold on you..

An excellent short overview of the benefits of conscious metacognitive exercise -- the attentional side of infotention. There's a lot of touchy-feely and neurobollocks about metacognition and meditation lately.

David McGavock's curator insight, July 19, 2013 5:54 PM

"when people’s minds were wandering, they tended to be less happy, presumably because our thoughts often tend towards negative rumination or stress."

That is presuming a lot since meditation affects our minds on so many levels. Familiarity with our thought process helps us to realize that we are not solid and that change/flux is the norm. It helps us realize that we have some control; albeit paradoxical control. Meditation slows our reactivity to people events and helps us appreciate our lives and other people. That's what I've experienced anyway.
