3 Things That Make Mindfulness Extremely Difficult

3 Things That Make Mindfulness Extremely Difficult | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Instructing somebody to meditate -- to release or dis-identify with his or her thoughts -- is like trying to instruct somebody to instantly sneeze, or like telling someone just not to think, when the mind but built to do little else but that.

Shambhala Sun - Getting Started (How to Meditate / September 2010)

Shambhala Sun - Getting Started (How to Meditate / September 2010) | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Zen teacher Norman Fischer proposes a two-week trial run to get your meditation practice started and looks at some of the obstacles that may come up.

"In short, if you want to meditate there is virtually no excuse not to. But human confusion is very clever, so it is still possible to talk yourself out of it. If so, be my guest. Sometimes that’s the way to finally begin serious meditation practice: by not doing it for ten or twenty years, until finally there is no choice."

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This approach was my way in. My teacher Karen Sothers gave me this article.  I set my intention to get up early and begin the day with at least 20 minutes of meditation. This soon evolved to 30 minutes to about an hour. It's two months now and morning meditation is one of my priorities.

I feel better.  I hope you can use this way in to feel better too.

Meditation - Alaska the Beautiful

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

My wife Jan and I just returned from a cruise through the Inland Passage that took us from Vancouver B.C. to Glacier Bay National Park.  We were there just a few days ago. This video from YouTube helped take me back. Special thanks to photographer Betty Higgins for this fine slideshow.

Being surrounded by Alaskan wilderness evoked the a sense of place we had during our many years living at in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  More than once I was reminded of sailing in Emerald Bay at Tahoe. The sheer granite, the waterfalls, the deep color of the water all under a blue sky.

Imagine unraveling the shoreline of Tahoe and stretching it out 30,000 miles and you begin to feel the enormity of Alaska. Part of that California feeling was no  due to  sunny weather. This was a tropical cruise to Alaska.  Clear skies and hot sun were daily gifts.

Meditating at Glacier Bay.. the ice sliding by the side of the ship, the birds roosting on the cliffs, the crackle and ping of glacier ice dissolving in sea water,  seals basking on the ice, the sudden crack and roar of a calving glacier...

...what better place to step out of time?

» Mindfulness & Meditation: Resting in Stillness - World of Psychology | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

Two broad categories of results can sum up most people’s purposes for meditating. The first is to fully experience the present moment and to encounter thoughts and bodily sensations without judgment. The second is to enter a place of calmness away from the reactivity that can overwhelm us.

One meditator sails into the maelstrom, the other seeks a temporary shelter from the storm. The most interesting thing is that each result comes from the same basic techniques. So what the meditator seeks, and how much time he or she is willing to put into it, determines the outcome.

Making the shift from doing to being

Making the shift from doing to being | Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it

When I teach meditation, I downplay the intricacies of technique and emphasize the value of relaxing and letting be. Generally, as a preamble to meditation I recommend practicing some deep relaxation—the kind that concludes most yoga classes—or a full body scan, which involves experiencing your body from toes to head in a slow, careful, mindful way. The meditation itself provides an opportunity to turn your attention from the compelling drama unfolding between your ears to the direct, unmitigated experience of the sensate world, usually beginning with the coming and going of the breath and from there expanding to the full range of sensations, both inside and outside the body. ~ Stephan Bodian
