Engage the Integrated Design Process | Whole Building Design Guide | Integrative Design | Scoop.it
Nigel Grier's insight:

A good article sharing IDP at a macro level. Frank Lloyd Wright referred to this process as "organic design"—he used the phrase to refer to the integral relationship in good architecture between the parts and the whole—and declared it the architect's obligation to assure consistency at every level of detail!

Nigel Grier's insight:

Great talk by Steve Jobs from the 80"s. He shares a story about a Scientific American study in the 70's on locomotion that ranked a variety of animals in their efficiency in getting from A-B. The condor was the most efficient while humans were about a third down the list. Interestingly they then compared human with bicycle and found that we were double the efficiency of the condor and off the chart. What is showed was that man is a tool maker and his the ability to make a tool to amplify an inherent ability that he has!

New study highlights how high performing buildings save millions

New study highlights how high performing buildings save millions | Integrative Design | Scoop.it
Facility Management Magazine
Nigel Grier's insight:

Good article on the human capital savings of HPB's, dissapointed that lighting is the main element promoted while it is typically only 18% of the energy profile of a building. Space heating and cooling, including pumps and fans is still typically 50%+ of the profile but not mentioned, we need to get away from the LED salesmen and start looking at the real energy consuming plant and equipemnt, otherwise it is just more green wash!

David Sandel's comment, May 1, 2013 8:24 AM
In downtown St. Louis for many years there was district heating. The main heat source was the local power plant and steam tunnels interconnected buildings in the downtown area.
Nigel Grier's comment, May 2, 2013 7:50 PM
Thanks David, I guess this is where district heating has an edge in that uses the waste heat from local power plants, I guess they look at some heat recovery and absorption chillers to district cooling. My understanding is that the systems are more energy efficient where you have coal base load and they chill the water at night taking load off the system during peak periods.
