What We Learned: A 1:1 iPad Reflection

What We Learned: A 1:1 iPad Reflection | Integrating Technology in The Classroom | Scoop.it

This past week at Burlington High School, we started rolling out iPads for incoming freshmen. During this process, I couldn't help but reflect on what had occurred over the course of a year. Around this time last summer, BHS had roughly one thousand iPads ready to roll out to all students. The anticipation was great, the waters uncharted. During the 2011-2012 school year, we, the IT department and the teachers charted a course that led us to many exciting discoveries as well as many learning experiences.

What makes an outstanding iPad lesson?

What makes an outstanding iPad lesson? | Integrating Technology in The Classroom | Scoop.it

""Technology is in no way a synonym for ‘outstanding.’ But, it is something that can facilitate that outcome again and again. It can seem melodramatic to say things like ‘iPads have changed the world,’ but they have. The very fact that there is a debate within educational establishments across the world as to whether they and their likenesses are the key to unlocking the future of learning should show all the sceptics that technology is not going away. It is something that needs to be embraced and explored. So what does an outstanding iPad lesson look like?"

Tech Tools For Teaching: Involve Your Students in Their Learning

Tech Tools For Teaching: Involve Your Students in Their Learning | Integrating Technology in The Classroom | Scoop.it
I’m sure you have all heard some version of the Benjamin Franklin quote above. With today’s students, living in a fast paced world, this quote is something to keep in the back of your mind when crafting engaging lessons. If there is any way to get students truly engrossed in their learning and reflecting on what they learned, you will see much better results with engagement and retention.

Recently, in Bethany Klone’s 3rd grade classroom students began work on the following math standard: Comprehensive Geometric/Measurement. How does a teacher go about teaching this concept and how does the teacher make it meaningful for the students? Involve them in the learning process.

while studying my Bachelor of Education I have quickly learnt how important it is for Teachers to keep students engaged and willing participants in their learning. Today's students are growing up in a technology rich environment, therefore it is expected that they leave school with high computer literacy.    How as teachers can we achieve this? This shows ways of including technology in the classroom without removing the importance of learning and the curriculum.

I have a great admiration for the thinking of Sir Ken Robinson... He speaks so eloquently and argues for creative learning...and so much more...

A stand out quote for me from this interview;

"What tends to dull the appetite [for learning] is being force fed things that people can't see an immediately relevance in or don't have an immediate interest in it...or where they are forced to learn in situations where they are inimitable... you know, 8 hours a day, sit still, do as you're told."

Bring on different ways of engaging with people around learning so that they not only 'get it' but they really enjoy it and become life long learners.

I recommend this 15 minute video to you!
