Advertisers often wonder if there is a connection between the type of emotions generated by an advertisement and how well consumers like the advertisement. My ongoing research with Phoenix Marketing’s automotive division has identified a strong relationship between successful ad performance and key emotions elicited by an advertisement. Luxury automotive ads that measure significantly higher on emotional characteristics such as Joy, Trust, Hope, Excitement, etc. trigger consumer responses that yield higher overall ad performance. Which means, it is less about which emotional traits you should have in the creative, and more about the ad’s ability to generate ANY strong emotional connection. Based on our Advertisement Performance Index (AdPi) score that measures recall, brand impression, purchase consideration, and creative appeal, each of the top performing luxury automotive ads contained within this research generate significantly higher levels of emotional ratings compared to lower performing ads.
