Seven Steps to Creating Screencast Videos for Online Learning

Seven Steps to Creating Screencast Videos for Online Learning | Instructional Technology In Higher Education | Scoop.it
When I first started teaching online, one of the most frustrating aspects was that I did not have access to an old-fashioned blackboard to give students a visual map of what I was teaching. I felt restricted by the text-based instruction of the discussion board and eventually began creating colorful flowcharts to teach essay structure, for example, or PowerPoint slides to explain the MLA style format.

Rebecca Frazee's insight:

"I'd aspired to give people a profound education--to teach them something substantial...but the data was at odds with this idea."

...he was obsessing over a data point that was rarely mentioned --  fewer than 10% finish, and not all of those people received a passing grade, either, meaning that for every 100 pupils who enrolled in a free course, something like five actually learned the topic. If this was an education revolution, it was a disturbingly uneven one."

Obama campaign tech chief denounces 'Big Data' - eCampus News | Instructional Technology In Higher Education | Scoop.it
The man who headed up the tech side of President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign took issue with higher education's emphasis on Big Data this week.

Predictive analytics is making its way into the world of education with new technology from Desire2Learn.
Rebecca Frazee's insight:

The new technology, simply called the Student Success System, is able to make predictions by incorporating a student's understanding of key concepts of a given course and whether or not they are keeping up with the required homework. Teachers can track a student's progress throughout the semester to ensure they stay on track to pass the class.

This new system acts as a complement to the company's existing Degree Compass platform, which uses a student's academic history to suggest courses that fit their learning style and offer the best chance for a passing grade. Desire2Learn bought Degree Compass from Austin Peay University in January for an undisclosed sum and has since run more than 700,000 course enrollments through the program
