Designing a blended learning course may seem complicated, but EDUCAUSE hopes to remedy that problem by offering a free MOOC on blended learning courses.

A new free, five-week MOOC will help educators design more engaging blended learning courses. "BlendKit2014" marks the first venture into the world of MOOCs for @EDUCAUSE.

 

Participants of the new MOOC may pursue an official “UCF/EDUCAUSE Certified Blended Learning Designer” certificate for completion of the course if they submit a portfolio of the blended learning materials they develop throughout the course of the class.

BlendKit2014 begins on April 21 and is currently open for registration through the Canvas Network. For more details check out #BlendKit2014 on Twitter.

When I first started teaching online, one of the most frustrating aspects was that I did not have access to an old-fashioned blackboard to give students a visual map of what I was teaching. I felt restricted by the text-based instruction of the discussion board and eventually began creating colorful flowcharts to teach essay structure, for example, or PowerPoint slides to explain the MLA style format.

"I'd aspired to give people a profound education--to teach them something substantial...but the data was at odds with this idea."

 

...he was obsessing over a data point that was rarely mentioned --  fewer than 10% finish, and not all of those people received a passing grade, either, meaning that for every 100 pupils who enrolled in a free course, something like five actually learned the topic. If this was an education revolution, it was a disturbingly uneven one."

The man who headed up the tech side of President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign took issue with higher education's emphasis on Big Data this week.

Harper Reed, who recently launched a mobile technology startup in Chicago after serving as chief technology officer for Obama’s 2012 campaign, said Oct. 29 at the State University of New York’s (SUNY) “Building a Smarter University” conference that universities’ focus on collecting and analyzing reams of data is “bulls***.”

Reed, according to a media report, denounced the term “Big Data” as a marketing tool meant to drive college and university IT officials toward expensive servers, and other technologies meant to store and analyze data.

Perusing Facebook, sending rapid-fire text messages, and tweeting back and forth with friends and celebrities alike might not be the best academic strategy, it turns out.

Yikes!

Freshman women spend upwards of 12 hours a day using some form of social media,

Nearly four in 10 college students said they could not go 10 minutes without checking one of their mobile devices.

 

But, reading newspapers and listening to music were associated with more/higher "academic behaviors."
