"In the not-so-distant future, communities could view their local libraries as the place to go when they want to publish their own ebook, create and edit their latest song or video, or even design and print out plastic tools, toys, and prototypes. A growing number of libraries already offer their patrons tools such as recording equipment and sound and video editing software. Now, some are beginning to house 3D printers. In fact, many libraries have begun viewing such services as a core part of their mission. (For more on this, see the editorial “Owning Up to the Future.”)"

"Over the last couple of years, I’ve come to think of my role as a teacher as that of a curator of ideas" says Corinne Weisgerber who teaches Social Media and Communication at St Edwards Unniversity in Austin, TX (if you haven't yet, check out her great prez here). As she explained in this post, the Curation Project was about getting her students "to set up a network of online mentors using social media tools" and "to identify experts in their field and connect with them in order to build a personal learning network (PLN)." The idea behing the PNL is to help them discover valuable information through social search that they wouldn't have discovered otherwise. Interesting project and read. And great work by the students who used various curation platforms for the project, including Storify and Scoop.it (links in the post)

Out of 125 responses from teachers indicating their top 3 apps, these are the apps that were listed most often.
In the end, there is a lot to consider when teaching online. In many ways, I find online teaching more challenging than teaching face-to-face. I also find the rewards help compensate: talking to my students on Skype who are all over the world still gives me a thrill. Watching strangers care for one another's learning and success makes me feel like we are doing important work. It's an exciting time to be in education.

Edmodo hopes to make the move from "app" to "platform," with the opening today of its API to third-party Web developers. At launch, Edmodo boasts some 35 partners who have already developed apps for the new platform -- these include Mathalicious, Late Nite Labs, Desmos, BrainNook, Aviary and (30) others. Using the Edmodo API, these companies can now connect their own apps to the Edmodo social network, meaning that they can tap into Edmodo's badge functionality, feeds, assignments, grade book and so on. These apps are integrated with Edmodo, in terms of single sign-on, analytics, and -- and this is key for both Edmodo users and app developers -- roles (that is, who's a teacher, who's a student, what grade is the student, who's a parent, who's a principal and so on).

If you're interested in taking your teaching skills online, there are several ways to go. Some make virtual teaching their full-time occupation. Some do it part-time, moonlighting for extra cash and experience. And more and more, traditional teachers are becoming switch-hitters who bring the best online strategies to their face-to-face classrooms.

Students want more control over how they use technology in school, but many classrooms are still making it difficult. That’s according to the most recent Speak Up 2011 report, “Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey,” which reflects the views of more than 416,000 K-12 students, parents, and educators nationwide surveyed on how technology can enhance the learning environment.

Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey – K-12 Students and Parents Connects the Dots with Digital Learning is the first in a two part series to document the key national findings from Speak Up 2011. This report focuses on how today’s students are personalizing their own learning, and how their parents are supporting this effort. The ways that students are personalizing their learning centers around three student desires including how students seek out resources that are digitally-rich, untethered and socially-based.
