5 reasons you should consider using classroom blogs

5 reasons you should consider using classroom blogs | Online and Blended Teaching | Scoop.it
Blogs have been around since the 90s, but classroom blogs are a relatively new phenomenon--and one, we might add, that we fully endorse
J. Mark Schwanz's insight:

While blogging is not anything new (20 + years now) it is funny to me that so many find it a "new" thing, especially in relationship to secondary classrooms where writing is a main event and collaboration is encouraged. This came up for me in an interview this week and I thought it very appropos to recommend this as a strategy to support writing across the curriculum.

I don't usually recommend articles that have a simple # list of "how to" or "things to consider" but the MAT "5 reasons" hits the mark on this timely topic, especially considering how many 1:1 programs are popping up.

Hmm. Maybe there are unexpected benefits to MOOCs. They are pushing Universities to more carefully justify on-campus offerings. What benefit is there to offering this course live?

Research: How Video Production Affects Student Engagement

edX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings:Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings. Videos in which the instructor speaks quickly and with high enthusiasm are more engaging.Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging than power point slides.
J. Mark Schwanz's insight:
Confirms what we all knew from first-hand experience. Attention spans don't stretch past give minutes on video content. PowerPoint style slides are nearly dead.

J. Mark Schwanz's insight:
I like #4 the best. Involve teachers in development of blended learning and it will not only stay relevant to your school's vision, it will boost learning. On the contrary, don't involve teachers and you will find blended learning to be counterproductive.

Terri Rice's curator insight, July 28, 1:41 PM

Blended learning is proven itself to be effective, efficient, and powerful. So what are the rest of educators waiting for? A bolt of lightening to hit them? This format for learning should be the norm in ALL levels of education in every part of the country. Money should not be an issue if the President really means what he says about educating all the children in America. I would like to see a study completed on crime rates versus increased blended learning. Does this style improve urban and suburban youngsters abilities to avoid falling into crime?
