If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that I posted a blog several days ago entitled Six Text Type Pairings for Critical Thinking & Common Core Success. However, among the documents published April 30, 2013 on thePARCC website is a PowerPoint entitled “PARCC ELA Passage Selection Guidelines” within which is a entitled “Standards Call for Seven Types of Paired Passages” (slide 14) that are demanded in adherence to the Common Core ELA/Literacy Standards.

One "rule of thumb" that I offer teachers that I work with is never present a piece of text in isolation. Bringing in another piece of text or media resource with a different perspective on a shared concept or theme automatically ups the rigor of discussion. Our brains immediately jump to comparing and constrasting, an analysis activity. When supported and cultivated by effective instructional practices, students are guided to the threshhold to higher order thinking.

Key phrase "informational fluency"  Webster defines fluency as being "capable of using a language easily and accurately." Considering information as the language informational fluency is the ability to manipulate that language for the purpose of communicating a message or idea. That, my friends, is the essence of the common core state standards.
