The Mindset that Makes Online Marketing Work

The Mindset that Makes Online Marketing Work | Digital & Social Media Marketing | Scoop.it

The struggle many face with online marketing is a misguided impulse to put various tactics into separate boxes instead of seeing each as an aspect of one overarching strategic process.

The result is often a disjointed, ineffective mess that leads companies large and small to question the return on investment of online marketing in general.

Four brands to inspire your content marketing strategy

Edwin Tam's curator insight, January 8, 2013 9:28 PM

Content marketing is about telling a story that resonates with your audience and finding a relevant channel to deliver it.

It’s the loyal followers that then spread the brand message, these days, commonly, but not exclusively, via social media. Well that’s the theory. Getting it right can be hard.

Sometimes we all have to go back to the drawing board to gather ideas and inspiration. For a recent content marketing workshop we hosted, I did just that. I wanted to showcase the brands that are doing content marketing brilliantly.

OK, I admit, some of the companies I used as examples have massive budgets, but they still have their unique challenges.

What all the brands have in common is the creative flair, the ability to change direction, adapting to new environments and communicating with the people that are most important to them – their customers – in a variety of ways.

Here are four brandsto inspire your content marketing strategy

Tumblr Vs. Blogging - Why Should Your Company Have Both? - Social Media Revolver

Tumblr Vs. Blogging - Why Should Your Company Have Both? - Social Media Revolver | Digital & Social Media Marketing | Scoop.it

Regardless of what industry you are in, chances are that your company has major marketing needs. In order for your business to be seen by as many people as possible, you will need to have several different means of accomplishing this; however, sometimes, many marketing platforms tend to look the same. So, how do you distinguish between those that are similar and understand the differences?

Two common marketing tools that people attribute as being one and the same are Tumblr and regular blogs. They assume that because Tumblr is similar to a blog, then it must be the same thing.

Right? Well, not exactly.

Ivo Nový's curator insight, August 12, 2013 10:42 AM

If your company relies on a lot of visuals, then Tumblr is a great fit for you, as it allows you to post pictures, which can ultimately bring more traffic to your site and encourage others to keep coming back.

Blogging, on the other hand, requires a little bit more time, as you have to write articles and have fresh content readily on hand for your blog. But your blog is also completely your own, not just an account on another site, giving you much greater options for customization and optimization.

Denis Lundie's curator insight, July 8, 2013 2:23 AM

Social media, as expected, are proliferating and also being embedded in collaboration applications. They can be public or private. Different social media appeal to different segments of the population for different reasons. Individuals can, and do, join different social networks for different interests or relationships in their lives. Finally, they are quite simply applications, with different functionality, will behave differently.

Much has been made in media and education circles of Facebook and Twitter, ranging from the inherent dangers to teaching by means of these, and how to integrate them into education. Policies have been developed around them. This picture should dispel the hype surrounding the most obvious social networks, as unique threats or opportunities, for learning.

IT strategies and policies should not developed around individual applications, especially not social networks. e-Safety education especially, should focus on responsible management of privacy, irrespective the medium. Teaching & learning opportunities should be sought in social media that are built for learning, or embedded in rapidly evolving learning applications.

Three Factors To Select What News Stories To Curate: Current, Interesting, Applicable

Three Factors To Select What News Stories To Curate: Current, Interesting, Applicable | Digital & Social Media Marketing | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good

Robin Good's curator insight, January 12, 2013 1:17 AM

To choose which news story to curate and pass on to your readers, is not always something easy to do.

My personal suggestion is to look only for the most interesting and relevant stories for your audience while leaving out anything that is mildly interesting. I'd always go for quality over quantity and I would not discard little-read stories or dated ones, because of these two factors. Rather I'd select them on the basis of their immediate usefulness to my reader and not on the one of their freshness or recency.

Serena Matter, of the Canadian Public Relations Society, has just published a short article suggesting three key criteria to employ in selecting what news to curate each day. She writes:

"Finding content to share online can be a challenge, especially when your goal is to provide information of interest to your followers.

In many instances, it is easier to re-tweet something that appears in your newsfeed, even if it’s not that relevant to your industry, than to come up with new material.

However, this wastes a valuable opportunity to engage your online stakeholders. Rather than taking the easy way out, there are a few simple guidelines you can follow to ensure any content you share offers value. When creating or searching for material to share, keep this acronym in mind: C.I.A. (Current, Interesting, Applicable)."

But beware: "current" is a misleading variable, as "something" can be "current" depending on the specific context in which it is presented and it is not an absolute trait of a news story.

A story from two years ago can be made immediately current and relevant simply by relating and connecting it to other information which is directly impacting our present.

Good for beginners. 6/10

Content Marketing and the Power of Video [Infographic]

Content Marketing and the Power of Video [Infographic] | Digital & Social Media Marketing | Scoop.it

There’s no denying that video has become an increasingly powerful tool for content marketers.

But it’s not just that video is big right now – it’s that it’s getting bigger. Earlier this year, Social Media Examiner reported that video was the number one area where marketers planned to increase their investments for 2012. As a result, online video usage rose 12% amongst B2B content marketers, according to a recent Content Marketing Institute (CMI) survey.

For companies, interest in video content is obviously linked to the popularity of online video in general (in case you haven’t heard, YouTube averages 4 billion hits each day). And the rise in tablet adoption has certainly made videos more accessible for mobile viewers as well. But the truth is, video production has also become easier (and less costly) than ever before. As CMI founder Joe Pulizzi points out, the combination of new technology and the sheer cost of video production has reached “a point where there are no barriers to entry” for companies.

So what role is video playing in the world of content marketing today? We compiled some of the most compelling numbers and use cases from around the Web to help tell the story of online video marketing and the different ways organizations use it to drive more business.

Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has an interesting and highly visual post on collecting vs. curating with Twitter, and on the curation potential Twitter has in store for those involved in education.

She quotes Mike Fisher writing: "Collecting is what kids do when asked to find resources for a particular topic. Usually, it represents the first 3 or 4 hits on a Google search, without meaning, discernment, or connections.

Curating is different. It’s the Critical Thinker’s collection, and involves several nuances (see Figure 1) that separate it as an independent and classroom-worthy task."
