Some Millennials — And Their Parents — Are Slow To Cut The Cord

Some Millennials — And Their Parents — Are Slow To Cut The Cord | Insta*Grad | Scoop.it
Millennials get a lot of financial and emotional support from their parents, which critics say causes delayed adolescence. But actually this close relationship benefits both kids and parents.
Insta*Grads's insight:

Meet the Parents: Many recent grads and millennials have moved back in with the parental units in order to save on rent.  But staying close to home, or at least close to the 'rents, may not actually mean that millennials are any less independent.  It also might indicate that our notions and standards for "helicopter parenting" are changing.

Silicon Valley's High-Paid High School Interns

Silicon Valley's High-Paid High School Interns | Insta*Grad | Scoop.it
Companies such as Facebook recruit high schoolers to fill positions in their intern programs
Insta*Grads's insight:

Code of ethics: The stereotypical "intern" is either a cute co-ed, starving student, an underpaid postgrad, or a ruggedly handsome Hollywood star, (who can forget Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in "The Internship?"),  but Silicon Valley is cultivating an even younger stalk of new talent. Some tech companies, like Facebook, are paying teens thousands of dollars  to develop code and apps. With employers bemoaning the lack of qualified STEM majors, tech internships like this could boost the engagement of young people in the industry. But how young is too young for an internship? Are young coders being groomed for great careers in technology, or they being taken advantage of? And what does it say about our job market when companies are willing to shell out thousands of dollars to pay high schoolers, yet perpetuate cycles of unpaid internships for college graduates? So, Insta*Grads, what would you rather do: code, or write a new labor code of business ethics?

Don't Send Your Kid to the Ivy League

Don't Send Your Kid to the Ivy League | Insta*Grad | Scoop.it
The nation's top colleges are turning our kids into zombies.
Insta*Grads's insight:

"In the Nation's Service[?]"

In his 1902 oration to Princeton undergraduates Woodrow Wilson exhorted students to use their education to improve the country. Yet is the Ivy League the right place to make change? Such ivy covered halls are hallowed ground in American higher education, but they are also the launching pad and playground for the already rich and privileged. This begs the question: are top-tier universities too elite for their own good, or for the good of this nation? In his book, David & Goliath, writer Malcolm Gladwell advises parents to direct their children away from the Ivy League, so that they can excel at less elite schools with less competition. Here's William Deresiewicz's take on what it means to have an all-star education.
