Pinterest can be great for some businesses but, for others, it can be a downright distracting and time-consuming irrelevance.

Social media for business is all about finding the platform that fits the core corporate aims and targets the appropriate audience.

This piece is by Mark Schaefer, - if you're not active on Pinterest, after you read this based on actual research, you might want to rethink your strategy.

Here are some highlights from The Social Habit research of American social media users shows some pretty staggering insights. Here are a few highlights:

  • Usage of Pinterest is already nearly as large as LinkedIn with 21% having a Pinterest account versus 26% on LinkedIn
  • More than half of Pinterest users visit the site each day.
  • We could be seeing just the tip of the iceberg for Pinterest’s growth. 38% of U.S. social media users plan to use Pinterest more often
  • 70% of the site’s users are women and 64% of the site’s fans are under the age of 34. In fact, Pinterest is the third-most widely-used social network for women 18-44 (behind Facebook and Twitter).
  • The most popular pins?

The Explosion of Pinterest and Why You Should Read This Report

The Explosion of Pinterest and Why You Should Read This Report | Inspiring Social Media | Scoop.it

This piece was written by Dave Copeland for Readwriteweb. There have been many articles about Pinterest but if you do nothing else, read the white paper by Engauge and report they're referring to. It is absolutely the best one I've seen to date. (more details below)

The most important thing in this piece is the report, here's what you'll see:

A new Engauge white paper breaks down:

**the make-up of the average Pinterest user

**shows that the end result of less reading is more of a focus on content curation than creation.

**The timing of that trend, combined with a stunning design when Internet users are focusing more on visual than text, has allowed Pinterest to explode in popularity.

This is what caught my attention - a quote from a user:

"When I'm looking for new trends on specific topics like fashion or birthday party themes, I now search Pinterest first -- not Google." - Karah Street

What Social Media Is Most Important To You?

What Social Media Is Most Important To You? | Inspiring Social Media | Scoop.it

Most Important Social Media
Friend asked a great question but in the wrong way. Social Media isn't important to me in and of itself, but each social media channel can help communicate marketing messages and thus become valuable and important.

Key is "matching the hatch" to borrow a fly fishing term.

Matching the hatch puts the right kind of content, what Gary Vaynerchuk calls "native content', on each social net when THAT information is important to communicating a marketing message. Here is how I answered:

Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish.

If I want comments and discussion GPlus.
If I want feedback from friends Facebook.
If I want to generally test Scoop.it.
If I want a "set it and forget it" content solution Paper.li.
If I have something happening now or want to newsjack Twitter.
To raise money on creative or gaming projects Kickstarter.
If I want to share videos YouTube.

If I want to serialize stories Storify.
If I want to test an infographic Pinterest.
If I want to do something with audio then SmartCloud.
If I want to create sustainable and potentially "evergreen" content then I use WP blogs. Content becomes "evergreen" based on how it performs (views, shares, conversions).
If I want to sell something ecom then Shopify.

Match the hatch to get the most from your content, your growing social media tribe, your time and content marketing and curation efforts.

Pinterest: What Early Adopters Need to Know

Pinterest: What Early Adopters Need to Know | Inspiring Social Media | Scoop.it

This piece was written by Jeff Turner, it makes you STOP and think. Pinterest is the latest new shiny thing but as Jeff says, buyer beware. His insights are right on the money.

He asks us to know the enviornment before we start posting and promoting. Here's an excerpt:

The Pinterest Stream And Fools Gold

Avoid Self Promotion:

"Pinterest is designed to curate and share things you love. If there is a photo or project you’re proud of, pin away! However, try not to use Pinterest purely as a tool for self-promotion".

Here are the takeaways:

My advice here is going to be the same advice I give people in any new social network... go have some fun first.

**Be social. Get to know the community, the lay of the land. The rest will sort itself out.

**The first thing that happens when the real estate community for example, "discovers" a new social media site is they focus on the media, not the social. This is a mistake. It leads to mining in the wrong streams.

Will Pinterest Lead The Way & Transform the Web in 2012?

Will Pinterest Lead The Way & Transform the Web in 2012? | Inspiring Social Media | Scoop.it

I selected this post written by Elad Gil because not only was it interesting and timely, but the comments from his readers were equally as valuable. So many different social curation platforms emerging, Pinterest is one to watch.......

Excerpt:

Social Content Curation As The Next Big Thing

The most interesting wave hitting the social web in 2012 is social curation. This was kicked off in 2011 as Pinterest's growth was noticed by Silicon Valley and a number of companies quickly followed suit -

**Snip. It launched as a social information curation platform, Quora adopted boards for a similar purpose, and Fab.com launched a structured social commerce feed.

There's so much information in this post, here's the takeaway. I would love to hear your comments about this next wave......

Takeaway:

2012 Will Be The Year of Curated Sets

**2012 will likely see an acceleration of structured, push button, social curation across the web. Why? Because most users don't want to take much effort to produce content, and consuming content in a structured manner (especially photos) is also much faster.

**Just as the first wave of social media has transformed the consumption of information, this next wave of social curation will fundamentally change how users find and interact with content over time.
