Aaron Swartz film kickstarted by director of Anonymous documentary - Wired.co.uk | Inspiring individuals | Scoop.it

Brian Knappenberger, the director of the Anonymous documentary We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists, was at the Social Computing Symposium  conference at New York University when he heard that Aaron Swartz had passed away. As word began to spread that the young programmer and internet activist had killed himself, Knappenberger realized he was surrounded by people -- Gabriella Coleman and Clay Shirky, amongst others -- who knew Swartz well. So as a filmmaker, did what came naturally: He grabbed a camera.

"Popcorn Maker, a tool for enhancing and remixing Web video from Mozilla, holds a lot of potential for educators, according to Linda W. Braun. The library consultant and educator, who created an earlier tutorial on make-your-own infographics, takes the free, browser-based application for a spin in the following screencast."

If you have wanted to learn how to use Popcorn Maker check out this video tutorial. Learn how to use the drag and drop, insert text, images, Google maps and more. Final projects may be shared (that does require that you create a log-in) and embedded in web pages. Braun's final comment is "“For school and public librarians, teachers, and parents who work with kids and teens, there are a lot of possibilities."

Julian Assange: The Internet threatens civilization - Salon

Julian Assange: The Internet threatens civilization - Salon | Inspiring individuals | Scoop.it

WIKILEAKS FOUNDER JULIAN ASSANGE’S newest book Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet is intended as an urgent warning, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Despite boasting publicity blurbs from a curious medley of public intellectuals — Slavoj Žižek, Naomi Wolf, and Oliver Stone among them — Cypherpunks may just as well have sunk to the bottom of the sea. Although Assange is one of the most vital and polemical activists alive, nobody’s talking about Cypherpunks, and nobody seems to have read it. This is a pity, since the book rings a justifiably strident alarm bell over the erosion of individual privacy rights by an increasingly powerful global surveillance industry.
