One of the most powerful cases for story, narrative that I have heard in a very long while. A true example of the recipient of the very benefits of story he preaches, Judah Pollack lays down the gauntlet to help us process life through story. Thanks Judah for mastering the degree of Awesomeness and showing me the possibilities within my own story - in 3D.

Insight Narrator's insight:

Data storytelling is a hot topic and there's lots to learn about it to be effective in business today. This is a very meaty and well-worth reading post on the critical connection between storytelling and data and creating insights/meaning.

I love how thorough the author is, asking questions like: "Are we really using storytelling techniques in our regular exchange of data-driven insights? Can data visualization amount to storytelling, in itself? What are the missing pieces, if not?"

The author, SCOTT BRINKER, then goes on to dig into relevant research to answer these questions. He gives us the rationale for his conclusions ("...data visualizations cannot amount to storytelling") , bringing us all the way down to Integrated Insight Management.

It's a fascinating and well put together read. There's also a free download to grab at the end of the article. Enjoy learning lots from this piece.

Separating Fiction From Facts in Data Storytelling

Separating Fiction From Facts in Data Storytelling | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it
The field of data storytelling is still relatively new and uncharted, but it has become a hot topic in both analytics and business circles. As various people step forward to provide opinions on how to tell data stories, misinformation is creeping in which, if left unaddressed, could lead aspiring data storytellers astray. This article will separate the fiction from the facts to help more people understand what is required to tell powerful data stories.

Data storytelling is all the rage now. Given how many industries, companies, and businesses are drowning in big data, figuring out how to narrate the insights to be found is a big deal.

Yet lots of mistakes about how to tell a data story are being made. This is a terrific post that helps bring clarity to the entire field. It's a great read and you will come away enlightened. And hopefully better able to craft that data narrative. Enjoy.

Articles of this kind are not that common. We mostly see posts on how to structure a story or presentation. The gold in this article are the suggestions Baker gives us to hone in on the audience first.

What a great article from HBR! Written by Alexandra Samuel, this post focuses on the different kinds of stories a company can tell with data throughout the customer life cycle. Yahoo!

We continue to get more sophisticated around telling stories with data. This post adds to our knowledge by talking about different kinds of data stories to tell, depending on where you customer is in the buying/engagement cycle.

I love that Samuel brought examples into the post for each different kind of story.

Now -- here's the rub -- data alone does not tell a story. So pay attention when you are sharing data that you are also actually telling a story, too. Make sure you create the present day setting, offer a problem or challenge, share what your data is telling you, deliver the opportunity + benefits available, deliver a strong close and a vision for what's possible.

OK -- go have fun digging into this piece, looking at the examples, and crafting your own kinds of data stories that connect with your customers using this model.

7 Simple Steps That Will Help You Tell a Story About Your Business - DIY Marketers

7 Simple Steps That Will Help You Tell a Story About Your Business - DIY Marketers | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it

Business storytelling is becoming more and more important this year.  You are constantly telling stories about your business. Whether that story is told in a speech, in ordinary conversation with co-workers or customers, or on your website or advertising or packaging, your story is aligned with the public face of your company and it must be carefully crafted from your DNA.

So, once you have a clearly delineated DNA, you need to start to create business stories that embody that DNA. Here is a proven system you might employ. And of course, you can also invent your own methodology for business storytelling if you prefer.

The key thing is not mine vs. yours, but to understand your Brand DNA and then systematically tell your brand story in a way that helps disseminate the message of your brand....

The Four Truths of the Storyteller

The Four Truths of the Storyteller | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it

I'm in the business of creating compelling stories. As a filmmaker, I need to understand how stories touch audiences—why one story is an instantly appealing box office success while another fails miserably to connect. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of the world’s most talented storytellers—gifted directors, novelists, screenwriters, actors, and other producers—and from them I’ve gleaned insights into the alchemy of great stories. Make no mistake, a hit movie is still an elusive target, and I’ve had my share of flops. But experience has at least provided me with a clear sense of the essential elements of a story and how to tap into its power.

The power of storytelling is also central to my work as a business executive and entrepreneur. Over the years, I’ve learned that the ability to articulate your story or that of your company is crucial in almost every phase of enterprise management. It works all along the business food chain: A great salesperson knows how to tell a story in which the product is the hero. A successful line manager can rally the team to extraordinary efforts through a story that shows how short-term sacrifice leads to long-term success. An effective CEO uses an emotional narrative about the company’s mission to attract investors and partners, to set lofty goals, and to inspire employees.

Sometimes, a well-crafted story can even transform a seemingly hopeless situation into an unexpected triumph....
