The 30-Second Rule: How to Create Unforgettable Presentations

The 30-Second Rule: How to Create Unforgettable Presentations | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it

Whether your audience is your boss, your banker, a small team of direct reports, a ballroom full of conference attendees, or thousands of people worldwide connected via teleconference, your success depends on being able to make a great presentation.

Great presentations are well-organized, flow logically from one idea to another, and ultimately leave the audience leave feeling rewarded and enlightened. All well and good, but if you don’t hook your audience in the first 30 seconds, all your careful preparation may be for naught. Therefore you have to begin with a bang! A television commercial has only 30 seconds to grab your attention; the same is true for you and your presentation.

The following steps will help you up your game...

Insight Narrator's insight:

The power of a high impact start and finish to your presentation is immense.  You have to grab attention before you can keep attention and build engagement - but it is amzing how little time presenters usually spend on getting this right compared to the time they spend on the bulk of their content.  Equally, a high impact finish is what people will remember long after you have finished talking, but many presentations either come to an abrupt end or just fizzle out!

The Art of Story Telling: 5 Tips to Telling a Great Story | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it
I’m sure you’ve been at an interview or a dinner party or a fundraiser and someone asks…”tell me about yourself”. Most of us define ourselves by the list of things we have done, the places we’ve been, the schools we’ve attended. But that’s not who we are. We are a collection of stories, not fables,... Wisdom in the Age of Information and the Importance of Storytelling in Making Sense of the World: An Animated Essay

Wisdom in the Age of Information and the Importance of Storytelling in Making Sense of the World: An Animated Essay | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it
For my part in the 2014 Future of Storytelling Summit, I had the pleasure of collaborating with animator Drew Christie — the talent behind that wonderful short film about Mark Twain and the myth of originality — on an animated essay that I wrote and narrated, exploring a subject close to my heart and mind: the question of how we can cultivate true wisdom in the age of information and why great storytellers matter more than ever in helping us make sense of an increasingly complex world. It comes as an organic extension of the seven most important life-learnings from the first seven years of Brain Pickings. Full essay text below — please enjoy.

Here's a handy list for anyone wanting to increase their engagement with customers/prospects on social media.

All of these can be used to encourage customers to share their stories. Is it straight-up storytelling? No. But it's a great list to get people engaged. And that's where storytelling starts.

So use these to your advantage. And you might think of more, too! Just make sure that at some point during the process you access customer gold by using an actual story prompt to get folks to share an actual story.

Use a statement that actually sparks a story like, "Tell me about the time when...." or "Tell me what happened when...."You get the idea :))

3 Simple Ways to Start Your Story | Get Storied

3 Simple Ways to Start Your Story | Get Storied | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it
Storytelling can be complex and the information about storytelling, well, overwhelming. The good news, is that you can start either way — from the future (with a vision story) or the past (with an origin story). In this article I want to show you simple ways that you can dive right into telling your story (without fretting or worrying so much if you’re getting it right). In a recent client workshop in New York City we unpacked this process, sharing some of my favorite ways to lead off any purposeful story. I shared six kick-off phrases that ANYONE can use to start a story in a way that’s compelling, uplifting, and inspiring. I like to think of it as Mad-Libs for transformational storytelling! The Story Literally Spills Out Of You, When You Use One Of These 6 Kick-Off Phrases. These 6 strategies are something we cover in great depth in our StoryU Online course Undeniable Story. Today, I want to share with you a few of them that are really important in setting the context and frame for your marketing, storytelling, and leadership efforts....
