Telling Stories with Visual Data: A Glimpse into the Future of Narrative | Harvard Business Review

Telling Stories with Visual Data: A Glimpse into the Future of Narrative | Harvard Business Review | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it

Below is a screen grab of a masterful interactive data visualization. This narrative-driven piece byPitch Interactive manages the extra-tricky task of balancing heavy subject matter with a clear story and compelling visuals. It's a glimpse into the future of data-driven storytelling. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the piece is that it wasn't commissioned by a media organization. It was built by Pitch as a way to explore and understand this complex topic. Bravo.

The full data visualization is here — it's worth watching, and scrolling over for a more in-depth view.

Impressive storytelling using data.

Very rarely do I come across a great piece of data visualisation that I feel will really add value to the insight communication process, but this is a great example of combining technology, data insights and storytelling. Others should watch and learn.

The Future of Infographics: Better Ways to Present Content

The Future of Infographics: Better Ways to Present Content | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it

In terms of visual data and design, instead of making the content or story fit into an infographic, we need to consider what is the best way to present the data or story.

What medium does the content best lend itself to?

To make this shift in finding better ways to present content, we need to change our mindset and our language. When we talk about infographics, we should categorically refer to them as creative pieces to help being confined to a predetermined content format. These formats can include videos, quizzes and other interactive elements that will make the infographic stand apart from the masses.

Visit the link for some strategies and examples of infographics that are on the right path and take an approach that is different than most of the infographics on the web.

5 Science Infographics Everyone Should See

5 Science Infographics Everyone Should See | Intelligent Communications | Scoop.it

The best science infographics make data digestible, accessible and visually appealing, without skimping on the relevant facts. Some are for scientists, organizing massive amounts of data in a way that’s powerfully useful; while others are designed for a lay audience, illustrating complex concepts simply, like the science behind the Higgs Boson or evolution. It’s in this latter category that science infographics are making the most obvious widespread impact.

Here are five science infographics for non-scientists that will change the way you see the world.

Insight Narrator, you're right. Context should be in the forefront of data analysis because you can't tell a story with the data without it.
Karen Dietz's comment, April 15, 2013 12:49 PM
I agree completely! Thank you for your comments.

Social is also adding the "story" back in data storytelling.
