At 81, Screen, Stage & Voice Actor, Christopher Plummer still relishing the actor's life | Kansas City Star | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
With a booming movie career---including several recent notable voiceover roles like "Charles" in "Up"---and as much passion for the work as ever, Christopher Plummer, should be an inspiration to us all. Great article about this great and always interesting actor.

Kansas City Star: "I don't listen to my voice so much anymore...All the pitfalls of playing the classics, you can fall in love with yourself...I’m glad (my ambition) is still there,” he says. “If it faded, what’s there to live for? It makes you appreciate other things if you keep working at your job and you love your job. Too many people in the world are unhappy with their lot. And then they retire and they become vegetables. I think retirement in any profession is death, so I’m determined to keep crackin’.”

Voice Actors: Are You Taking Proper Care of Your Instrument? Juilliard Coach Andrew Wade Gives Emergency Vocal Tips| Backstage.com | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Interesting article on what to do if you lose your voice...it may not necessarily be laryngitis...Since our voice is our instrument, as voice actors we should do everything we can to learn how to take proper care of it...(Wish I had learned some of this stuff years ago...wouldn't have done so many dumb things...)

Backstage.com: "There are five parts to Wade's immediate approach: breathing, steaming, drinking water, humming and—just to be certain suspected pharyngitis isn't actually laryngitis—see a physician."

Mary Lynn: "Absolutely! You can have the most amazing voice but if you can’t act, it’s just an amazing voice. You have to be able to make the copy your own. Everything in voiceover is acting…making the words come to life."

Are All Your Voiceover and On-Camera Demos "Old School"? What You Should Know About Producing Demos In 2011 | Bonnie Gillespie/ The Actors Voice:

Are All Your Voiceover and On-Camera Demos "Old School"? What You Should Know About Producing Demos In 2011 | Bonnie Gillespie/ The Actors Voice: | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
It's uncanny...Week after week, casting director, Bonnie Gillespie, manages to post something that I have either thought about; or already actually discussed with students in a voiceover class. There can only be two logical explanations for this: 1) I'm being followed; or 2) that Bonnie is an absolute genius!

This week she address how "demos' are evolving from the old, "linear" format; using instead a more-digital friendly format of shorter, specifically-targeted clips that makes it easier for you to market yourself in a way that's more producer- and casting-director friendly. Btw While she's referring specifically to on-camera demo reels in this article, 90% of what she says applies equally to voiceover demos...

BTW If you'd like to see a good example of how this is done, please check out my friend, mentor and Voiceover Maestro, Thom Pinto's website: http://www.thompinto.com/styles.htm

The Actors Voice: The Evolving Demo Reel: "..Sure, keep an old-school, linear demo reel available for agents, managers, or anyone who wants a broad overview of what you can do, but offer up clips to the buyers out there who are telling you they need X, Y, and Z. Because you have a clip that shows you doing Z means you've just showed the buyer who needs Z right now that you can do that job."

Having all the best, top-of-the line, state-of-the-art equipment in the world cannot salvage a crappy performance | Music Recording Gear | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Hear, hear! Yes, by all means invest in really good quality basic equipment, but know that even the best-est, brightest, shiniest piece of audio equipment cannot cover-up bad acting, a lack of connection to your listener or completely missing the central point of the script...Shorter version: Too many people with home studios over-invest on equipment; but not enough on mastering their craft...be it music or voiceover...

Music Recording Gear: "....all you really need to achieve professional recordings,
is equipment of basic professional quality. Experienced and skilled engineers
don’t need anything more. They do love exotic and expensive audio toys,

Voice Actors: Does Your "Brand" Offer The Unique Solution To Your Potential Client's Problems? What Your Brand Needs To Do...| ActorRated.com | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Developing your acing "brand" isn't really a new concept –it's been with us since at least the last millennium –but what probably is new to you is thinking about it more from the producer/client/ casting director's POV than your own. This article does a good job explaining why that's important, in addition to laying out what, ideally, your "brand" needs to do.

BTW This post is directed to on-camera talent, but all of her main points apply equally to voiceovertalent.

ActorRated: "In acting terms, [branding] is the stuff that makes you unique and different from other actors – even those within your type. Therefore it makes sense to understand that branding is not about getting casting directors to choose you over the competition, but it is about getting casting directors and producers to see you as the unique solution to their casting needs."

How A Mild Dose of Negative Information About You Online May Actually Help Your Business and Reputation | Stanford Graduate School of Business | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
If mildly critical or negative information appears about you online, don't lose too much sleep over it or pay thousands to a Reputation Management Consultant to bury it deep in Google searches. A new study published by the Stanford Graduate School of Business suggests that as long as the information published is not overwhelmingly negative, not only should you be able to survive it, but you might actually benefit from it...

Sounds weird and counterintuitive, I know, but most internet marketing consultants will tell you the same thing, and there's also lots of anecdotal evidence to back it up.

Stanford Graduate School of Business: "We find that as long as the negative information about a product is minor, your pitch [to a consumer] might be more persuasive when it calls attention to that negative, especially if consumers have already learned some positive things," said Baba Shiv, the Sanwa Bank, Limited, Professor of Marketing, at the business school."

Voice Actor John Benjamin of "Archer" and "Bob's Burgers" Fame Shows His Face and Hits the Road | New York Times | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Good weekend brunch read...entertaining article from the New York Times on John Benjamin, the voice of "Archer" and "Bob's Burgers," which talks about both his success as a voice actor and new show “Jon Benjamin Has a Van,” premiering on Comedy Central on Tuesday. They describe it as "a kind of cracked parody of 'On the Road With Charles Kuralt'.”

New York Times:"JON BENJAMIN knows that you may well be unimpressed by his face. After all, you’ve probably never seen it, though his distinctive voice is familiar to viewers of the two animated series on which he currently plays the title roles, FX’s “Archer” and Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers.” That rich, deep, deeply annoyed baritone seems at odds with the impish, bearded actor sipping soup in a downtown restaurant on a recent rainy afternoon..."
