The Pirates! Band of Misfits Aardman Animated Film Trailer starring Hugh Grant in his first voice acting role | EverythingAction | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Looks very funny, as does the great Aardman Studios animation. While it's hard to beat Hugh Grant's droll delivery, can't seem to shake the feeling that I've seen this before ;-)...Looks like others feel the same way, too...

EverythingAction: "Aardman Animation, the studio behind Wallace & Gromit, are back with a wacky take on Pirates, starring Hugh Grant as The Pirate Captain out to win Pirate of the Year... I get a very “Monkey Island” vibe from this movie and that’s a very good thing, so I’m excited."

20+ Voiceover Rate Sheets & Resources

20+ Voiceover Rate Sheets & Resources | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Blogger/voice actor, Dave Courvosier, put together a very valuable reference for voice actors by gathering a list of voiceover rate sheets from various sources---including Union rates---so that they are all combined in one place. It's very helpful in that it allows you to contrast and compare rates, if you are trying to figure out what to charge for freelance work. In addition to rates, you can also find out how to calculate studio time required to record a finished piece, and what to charge for extra, non-voiceover tasks, like editing and post-production that all actors, and producers should find useful.

No Joe Buck until his voice recovers (Voice actors should pay attention) | Detroit Free Press/Jamie Samuelsen's blog:

No Joe Buck until his voice recovers (Voice actors should pay attention) | Detroit Free Press/Jamie Samuelsen's blog: | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
I post this because Samuelsen makes an excellent point that all of us who use our voices professionally should recognize and heed, even if we DON'T want to hear it: "...When your voice is your job, there are some days it’s just not up to the task..the listener doesn’t really want to hear someone struggling with laryngitis."

If you are suffering from a cold, or other noticeable vocal problems, don't audition. Everyone can hear it, even if you think they cant. Really. Rest your voice; don't push it because in the long run, you may be doing permanent damage to you vocal chords by using your voice when you're suffering from laryngitis. It's your body's way of letting you know that your voice needs a rest. Listen to it. It's smarter than your ego.

(BTW Some of us vote for no Joe Buck, even AFTER his voice recovers...but that topic is more appropriate for another forum..

Detroit Free Press/Jamie Samuelsen:"The best players head to the DL while they recover, and Buck should do the same."

Video Games Evolve; give players moral choices that affect outcome of story...Complex storylines=More work for voice actors | The Denver Post

Video Games Evolve; give players moral choices that affect outcome of story...Complex storylines=More work for voice actors | The Denver Post | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
How does this equate to good news for voice actors? Longer, complex story-lines and character development; and longer cut-scenes equal more dialog and many more hours of work behind a mic for voice actors. Is there any downside? Only if you're not a strong actor...The more movie-like games become, the better actor you have to be cast in them....

Denver Post: "Gradually, nonaction scenes are becoming more central to games and the story is the focus. "Grand Theft" was a start in that direction, with two different endings depending on player choices. The new "Star Wars" game will have about 20 different endings and a billion ways to get there."

Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ trailer: Watch it here! | EW.com | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Looks like Spielberg is going to do for performance capture animation what he did for sharks...and that Andy Serkis is the fast-becoming the 'Meryl Streep' of the genre.

EW.com: "After years of wondering what Steven Spielberg’s take on Tintin would look like, we finally get our first good, long gander today... looks like an swashbuckling, globe-trotting, planes-trains-and-automobiles-packed adventure yarn that aims for the same kind of all-ages thrills provided by Spielberg movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark. The performance capture animation (done by producer Peter Jackson’s WETA digital) is bright and graphic — a far cry from the gauzy, uncanny-valley-approaching style of something like 2004′s The Polar Express."

Amazing technology...the potential applications boggle the mind! Wonder if this means that 3-4 years down the road, ADR voice actors will be doing looping from their home studios, too...at least on smaller-budget indies, foreign animation, and TV projects?
NB: It takes a minute to load the video and the product is so new that their website isn't even completed, yet.

(By the way, just to make it perfectly clear...I have no affiliation with this company whatsoever, nor do I profit in any way from their sales. I just happen to think that their idea is very, very cool!)

Getting Your Voiceover Demo Right | VoiceOverCoach Australia

Getting Your Voiceover Demo Right | VoiceOverCoach Australia | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Excellent advice from Australian voice actor and coach, Abbe Holmes,on what you should know before you invest lots of time and money into recording a new professional voiceover demo.
BTW, if this post seems a bit familiar, it's because the author recently updated and re-posted the article. We've decided to feature it again for two reasons: 1) because it's an outstanding article, chock-full of really smart, on-point information, definitely worth re-reading and; 2) so you can read the updated version with the added information.

VoiceOverCoach Australia: "I hear far too many demos that have been made before the voice artist is ready. Sometimes the demos just say ‘inexperienced person with nice voice doing nice job’, but I’m not sure they know enough about what they’re doing....It’s a pity, because time and money has been invested. The fact is, many of them completely miss the mark as far as getting work is concerned, even though sometimes it’s evident that the person has potential. But potential, unfortunately, probably won’t get you a job."

Promo Voice for 'Glee,' "American Idol' and 'Sopranos' Voice Actor George DelHoyo narrates as Mariachi Owl in 'Rango' | Examiner.com | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Most people know George DelHoyo as the promo voice for Fox and HBO. (Hard to think of 'The Sopranos,' 'Glee' or 'American Idol' without thinking of George's voice.) Since this article doesn't include video of George, we've posted a companion link to a YouTube video of George from 2010 where he discusses his typical day...voicing 10-11 promo/trailer gigs! We think that this is especially impressive when you consider that George's first language wasn't even English...

Examiner.com: "As one of the most sought-out voiceover actors in the TV and film industries, George DelHoyo is using his talent to do something he's never done before – give life to an animated character...In “Rango,” DelHoyo, who has narrated over 500 movie trailers and a number of TV show promotions throughout his career, lends his voice to Señor Flan, an accordion-playing owl who performs music with his mariachi band and also narrates the film."

Why Excellent Video Game Voice Actors Can't—or Shouldn't—Be Stars | Kotaku | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Longish, rather scholarly article, but definitely thought-provoking and worth reading. Discusses the role of voice actors in video games and why even the best voice actors shouldn't try to stand out too much...

Kotaku: "Crucial, but subordinate; powerful, but not the point, voice acting is one of the most unexplored and unexamined tools in the game developer's arsenal. It's now being examined by Bissell, a writer of...Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter, who has lately brought a refreshing intelligence and rigor to discussions of games—particularly how they operate (or fail to operate) as storytelling vehicles. Bissell is profiling voice actor Jennifer Hale for an upcoming issue of The New Yorker...Bissell was wowed by Hale's work and her process, but he still can't say acting can be seen as the point, as the focus, of video games. He has a hard time seeing the voice-actor as the star and acting as the element that sells a game."

As good of an interview as anyone is going to get out of Sean Penn; he shows his famous prickly* side (*site is PG-rated), but he was about as cooperative and forthcoming as I've seen him be in an interview. Bastion: Voiceover-Driven Video Game Is Breakout Hit at E3 And Getting ALL the Buzz | XBLAFans

Bastion: Voiceover-Driven Video Game Is Breakout Hit at E3 And Getting ALL the Buzz | XBLAFans | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Could a voiceover-driven video game be the next huge breakout hit? If the post-E3 buzz is to be believed, it certainly looks like a definite possibility...Check out these articles and reviews of "Bastion," which is set to be released on 7/20, and won the "Best Downloadable Game" at this years' E3. Hopefully it will kick-off a whole new voiceover-driven game trend.(We can only hope...)

And congratulations to voice actor, Logan Cunningham, who gives a performance that has the whole video game industry talking. (You can hear his performance in the trailer; 3rd posting from the top.)

XBLAFans: "Much has been made of this reactive narration—a constant commentary that dynamically reacts to the choices made by the player. When we fell off the map, we were greeted by a dry response of “kid better watch his step.” Defeating enemies, taking damage, destroying random crates… all of these actions earned us a different flavor of narration. It was a seamless mix of tutorial, character development, storytelling, and atmosphere that made us crave more."
