What they didn't teach you in acting school... | The Casting Corner | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it

A straightforward discussion from Casting Director, Mark Sikes, on how difficult it really is to succeed in the "business" part of show business. He also offers smart, practical advice on various things you should know and actions you should be taking to increase your chances of breaking through and sustaining a professional acting career. No sugarcoating here; he just tells it as he sees it.

By the way, while Mark is an on-camera director, most of hs observations apply to voice acting and voiceover auditions, too.

Mark Sikes: "Hollywood isn't fair. There are people in Hollywood who will have advantages over you that are not based on their talent. Welcome to the life of an adult. Things aren't always fair. Focus on your strengths to make you more competitive and remember that plenty of actors made it in this business that didn't have any of those advantages so you can, too."

Chris Ware's curator insight, April 30, 2:08 AM

How hard do you realy have to work to be able to fit in to character.? What sort of lengths do you go to, to be able to act the best you can and remeber the lines at the same time, in a short period of time? Give me number of ways in whichyou would go about this.

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Good article that suggests some key questions you should ask and research you should do, before you submit an audition for an open title on ACX.

1. Does this title fit my abilities?

2. Will producing this title make me any money?

3. Does this project fit into my schedule?

4. Do I have any of my own questions for the rights holder?

We strongly recommend taking ACX's advice. It can save you from a lot of stress and aggravation in the long-run. You don't want to take on a project that you can't handle or that takes you so long to complete that you end up earning less than minimum wage for your efforts.

Paul Olden, On Script & Off, Giving Voice to the Yankees | New York Times | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it

Paul Olden, the [Yankee's] public-address announcer since 2009, says he has “free rein pretty much to change stuff the way I would say it...and they trust me not to go too far out of the Sheppard mold.”

He meant Bob Sheppard, the Yankees’ public-address announcer for more than five decades, from the last days of Joe DiMaggio in 1951 to the present Derek Jeter era. Mr. Sheppard was not so much an announcer as an institution.

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Paul Olden has been the Yankees’ public-address announcer since they moved into the new stadium in 2009. In this new New York Times interview, he discusses his preparation for each game, including the challenges of pronouncing opposing players' name correctly (‘Say it slow. Don’t rush it: Shin ... "How I Booked 100 Acting Roles In 5 Years" and "How To Cold Call Producers" by Bill Oberst Jr. | Film Courage

Bill is the real deal. A shining example of putting forth concentrated effort and maintaining humility. We still have a lot more in this new series to share. We'd also recommend visiting his Facebook page to study the way he shares his work with others as it is among the best we've seen.https://www.facebook.com/ActorBillOberstJr
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

While not a household name, Bill Oberst is a very busy working actor. Remember "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter?" Yep. That was Bill in the starring role. (Eat your heart out Daniel Day!)

The reason that Bill stays so busy is because he's also a smart actor. In these short videos he shares tips on how he's managed to land so many jobs in the last few years. It's nothing that you haven't heard before...work hard, audition, cold call, build relationships, network, promote your work...but what is new is that Bill goes about it in a much craftier way than most that makes a whole lot of sense and helps him get his message amplified across social media channels.

We also highly recommend watching the short video right after this one, "Cold Calling Producers About Acting Jobs" for more savvy, practical  tips from Bill:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7qVtZwEtSs

By the way, Bill is an on-camera actor, but almost all of this advice can be applied to finding voiceover work as well.

Hands down the best step-by-step explanation of the many considerations and elements that go into producing a strong, professional character demo from veteran voice actor, Dee Bradley Baker'.

This post can be found on Dee's excellent website, "I Want To Be A Voice Actor," which we strongly recommend that all voice actors check out, whether you're just starting or in the business 20 years: .http://iwanttobeavoiceactor.com/

5 Easy-to-Use Animation Tools for Beginners | Mashable

5 Easy-to-Use Animation Tools for Beginners | Mashable | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Looking to create a cool animation? Check out these five easy-to-use tools for making your own animated logos, title sequences and personalized cartoons.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Okay, so you know how all the articles you read nowadays on how to market yorself as an actor advise you to self-produce your own projects? And how most voice actors say, "I get how on-camera and stage actors can self-produce an internet show or a play, but how the heck can I do that?" Here's how...

Yes, the animation is crude, BUT probably on par with some of the cartoons you watched as a kid. Some talented, creative people out there are figuring out innovative way to use these tools, create online cartoons, generate a lot of online buzz, and end up with offers to create more content. Why shouldn't you be among them? Yes, you have to have some serious talent and acting chops to pull this off to make it work, because bad animation + bad writing+ bad voice acting will yield you nothing. But we know plenty of talented, clever people who are just sitting around waiting for their agents to send them auditions. Most of these tools are inexpensive, some are free. If it costs you nothing to try, why don't you?

Great Advice from LA Talent Agent: How Actors Should & Shouldn't Spend Their Money | Backstage | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it

"When you’re hiring a designer, there’s no need to pay extra for choppy animations that take forever to load. Please trust me on this. Less is more. It’s also cheaper.

Another way actors throw away their money is by signing up for seminars that are questionable at best...Actors sign up for these money pits because they’re desperate. They think there’s a magic bullet out there that will solve all their problems. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing...

Remember, you can’t advance your career by throwing money at it. Success as an actor is borne from talent, hard work, and perseverance."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Excellent advice from LA agent aka "Secret Agent Man" on what actors should and should not spend their money on.

What he says about keeping websites simple is dead on; don't blow money on unecessary stuff that won't help you book the job. Nor should you spend on fancy folders or elaborate packaging to get your submission noticed by agents. According to this one, it won't.

Google’s chief executive said he has paralyzed vocal cords, a rare health problem that causes a hoarse voice and constricted breathing...One of Mr. Page’s vocal cords was paralyzed after a viral infection 14 years ago, and the second was left with limited movement after a cold last summer."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Proof once again that you should never take colds or laryngitis lightly, especially if you depend on your voice for your living. If the the CEO of Google can't get it repaired easily, no one can.

The most encouraging news in this article is that the Page family has made a very generous donation to the Voice Health Institute for a research program on improving vocal cord nerve function, and as a result, thousands of people around the world who are experiencing similar vocal cord problems, stand to benefit. Kudos to Mr. Page for putting up the money to not only help himself, but others.

Videos games have changed significantly since they started to make their mark over 43 years ago. With the evolution of video games also came more of a focus on telling a better story. To do that, video game developers incorporated voice actors into their games to bring them more life...This list is dedicated to those voice actors and actresses who brought their respective characters to life, and captured them in such a way that we can never forget them.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Many of the usual suspects on the list...Mark Hamill...Nolan North...Jennifer Hale, but we're pleased to see so many female voice actors recognized, which is unusual. Our one major beef with this list..? It should be called "The 25 Greatest Voice Acting Performances In Big-Budget Video Games," because it focuses on big-budget games produced with LA talent with a few Canadian actors thrown into the mix. How Much Do Stand-Up Comics Earn & How? A Look Behind The Curtain | New York Times | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
Cruise ships, podcasts, college tours, television and even the traditional comedy stage show: comics find diverse ways to meet the challenges of making a living.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Excellent article that breaks down by the actual numbers how much working, stand-ups really earn and where their multiple streams of income come from. It's interesting to note that two of the comics on the list derive a sizeable portion of their income as voice actors on animated series. Those of you who who seriously aspire to work on an animated series at some point should take note.

In fact, there is definitely a lesson in this article for anyone who aspires to make a living as an entertainer. In all cases, you'll see that a large part of these comics' success is due to self-marketing, -producing and -promotion. Is there anything that these artists do to promote their businesses that you can borrow and adapt?

We wish that the New York Times would feature more of these "behind the numbers" breakdowns on what various catgories of non-celebrity entertainment professionals earn, such as actors, voice actors, singer and dancers. By reporting actual real earnings to those who are seriously considering a career in one of these professions, they'd be providing a very valuable and sobering public service.

Dialects well-done can make all the difference; how to make a fake accent convincing | PRI.ORG | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it

Fascinating multi-media feature from WSJ on new research which seems to indicate that the way that your voice is perceived by others can have a significant effect on your career and life; much moreso than previously thought!  The good news is that if you discover that you have a problem, even the most annoying vocal traits can be fixed with consistent practice under the guidance of a good speech pathologist or in some cases, medical treatment.

Make sure to check the article "Is This How You Really Talk?" which accompanies this video: http://on.wsj.com/163GnvG; and the fun infograph which shows well-known examples of the most annoying voice types: http://on.wsj.com/11FIUq3 . ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope’ being dubbed into Navajo: auditions for voice actors begin today! | AP | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — In the new translation of Star Wars, Darth Vader is Luke’s bizhe’e...they’re looking for fluent Navajo speakers to fill some two dozen roles. Casting calls are scheduled Monday in Burbank, Calif., and May 3 and 4 — the unofficial Star Wars holiday — at the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, Ariz.

Potential actors shouldn’t worry if they don’t sound exactly like Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker or Han Solo, only that they have Princess Leia’s spunk and fire or Han Solo’s daring, bad-boy-next-door attitude. Chewbacca and R2D2 will keep the language they speak in the Navajo version, and technical effects will be applied to Darth Vader and C-3PO so they sound like the originals."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

How awesome is this...We don't know how many of our InsideVO followers speak the Navajo language fluently, but for any who do, this is a dream-come-true opportunity! Who among us hasn't imagined re-enacting the dialogue from Star Wars?

Bet you're regretting not having paid attention in your high school Navajo language classes now...

Crystal, Goodman aren't just roommates at 'Monsters University'...they share a recording booth at Pixar, too! | USA Today | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it

The voice stars recorded together again for the prequel, allowing them to play off each other..."His voice is just too big, too good to go off a recording,' Crystal says. 'You need to be in a room with the guy to get the chemistry."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

One of the first things you learn if you visit Pixar Studios, is that each characters' lines are recorded separately; after which Pixar's stellar team of award-winning sound editors and designers painstakingly builds the dialogue from the recordings. Line deliveries are perfected by cobbling together parts of sentences or words from various takes to create just the right turn of phrase.

The exception to the rule are the characters of "Mike" and "Sully," whose dialogue Billy Crystal and John Goodman have always recorded together beginning with "Monsters Inc." The reason they allow the two actors to work together according to director Dan Scanlon is that "there's a rhythm between those two guys that you just can't duplicate from separate (audio) tracks."

BREAKING! Union voiceover talent to get 6% pay hike | Inside Radio | Inside Voiceover—Cutting-edge Insights + Enlightening, Entertaining News for Voiceover Professionals | Scoop.it
The SAG-AFTRA National Board of Directors has given its unanimous approval to new contracts for radio and television commercials. A deal was reached with the ad industry earlier this month.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

From article: "Talent will also be paid more for spots that are also used online, the size of which depends on how long the spot is to air on the web.  The maximum period of use for new media commercials will now be 21 months.  The contract also includes an exemption allowing talent to produce public service announcements without being paid – as long as the PSA only runs for one year and doesn’t solicit donations."

The agreement still needs to be ratified by the members, but all in all seems like a good result given the tough negotiating environment.
