Sylvianne Parent's curator insight, September 6, 2015 1:09 PM

The Personal Inquiry project: supporting scripted inquiry learning via software and mobile devices

The Personal Inquiry project: supporting scripted inquiry learning via software and mobile devices | Inquiry Learning1 | Scoop.it

The University of Nottingham and the Open University are partners in a project to help school students learn the skills of evidence- based inquiry in science and geography. The three year project, funded by the UK ESRC and EPSRC research councils, is developing a new approach of scripted inquiry learning, where children aged 11-14 carry out scientific explorations between their classroom, homes and discovery centres, supported by personal mobile technologies and shared classroom displays.

A computer toolkit is being developed that provides dynamic lesson plans to guide the learners through a process of finding a topic, deciding on an inquiry question, planning and investigation, collecting and analysing evidence, responding to the inquiry question, sharing results, and reflecting on progress. The teacher has additional software to plan and monitor the student activity.

The project is part of the Technology Enhanced Learning research programme (http://www.tel.ac.uk).

What I learned from going blind in space

What I learned from going blind in space | Inquiry Learning1 | Scoop.it
There's an astronaut saying: In space, “there is no problem so bad that you can’t make it worse.” So how do you deal with the complexity, the sheer pressure, of dealing with dangerous and scary situations? Retired colonel Chris Hadfield paints a vivid portrait of how to be prepared for the worst in space (and life) -- and it starts with walking into a spider’s web. Watch for a special space-y performance.

Leslie Maniotes's curator insight, April 29, 2013 2:12 PM

Feelings ARE the driver of human change... hmmmmm... not knowledge, so what are we missing out on without inquiry?  Student motivation and drive, excitement for learning, love of learning... maybe that's what can get people to see that school is BORING and inquiry can make school fun, exciting and learning engaging for students.

Deborah Owen's comment, April 30, 2013 9:42 AM
Their book, "Decisive" is on my list for this summer. I've heard Dan speak before and he's right on the money. I agree that too often school IS boring! You should have seen my class this week as they researched topics that THEY chose. It's a big difference.
Deborah Owen's curator insight, April 30, 2013 9:49 AM

Studies show that "knowledge" does NOT cause change, but "feelings" DO. If you want someone to change their behavior, all the analysis in the world will not make a dent. But putting their feelings first, will be the first step to cause change.

Guided Inquiry is based on a model in which the affect is part of the process. If we ask students to consider their feelings, they are more likely to learn something better and with more interest and excitement.
